Ive just realised. Thanks to the videogame "Star Wars Commander", the ships included in that game are canon (It is included in the new "Lucasfilm Story Group").
So.... what does this mean? Nothing really. Just that the new canon will be constantly stained by the old Expanded Universe creating many many many inconsistencies (Like, why would they use X-Wing in Episode VII if they make E-Wings canon).
Also, in this game the Death Troopers appear. So next time you hear that the new canon was a way of getting rid of stupid Expanded Universe stuff just remember that Zombie Stormtroopers are now officially included there.
So... the TIE/D, Z-95, Decimator and HWK are now canon.
IIRC E-Wings may have been 'better' than X-Wings were but they were a far bigger pain to maintain and cost a lot more besides. That is also ignoring the X-Wings getting an upgrade or two which very well could be based on things learned from the E-Wing.
Wookipedia explains why X-Wings were more common even after the E-Wing went into production, it's the same reason people still use AK-47s instead of fancier guns, cheap, reliable, more accessible and easier to maintain.

Which mirrors real life. That is the reason why the Russian T-34 and the Sherman tanks in WW II were so popular (in a nutshell).
Edited by General MayhemWith the death of the EU it doesn't matter to me anymore what is and isn't "canon". It'll be a mess for those that loved the EU and iirrelevant to those that never knew it.
The Z-95 has been canon since it appeared in the Clone War cartoon several years ago. I'm not at all sure why it's surprising to folks that it's canon.
I'm hoping that with FFG working with Disney that X Wing will sort of be like a shelter for EU ships I like and don't want to be retconned, the E wing being one of them.
However, I usually just assume that all of the EU is canon until it has been contradicted, even with the new changes.
Edited by SirEmilCraneThough this is nice I have no interest in hearing from some corporate suite that the last 30odd years of cannon material is no longer to be considered canon just so some highly payed unimaginative dip-s**t director can have an easier time doing what he wants to an IP that's been around for the better part of 50 years

This version is now canon too.

...and, in any case, the X-Wings in Episode VII are rather different from the X-Wings in the OT.
So maybe the E-Wing did take production precedence over the OT X-Wing for a while (although there is plenty of reasons to explain why it wouldn't - Vader's TIE Advanced is plainly superior to the regular TIE Fighter, but it never replaced it)... but that doesn't mean that the improved X-Wings we see in Episode VII aren't a further development from the E-Wing.

Yeah those ships being in "Star Wars Commander" makes them no more canon than the fact they are in THIS game. Unless Disney and Lucasfilms have made a statement saying that all content in SWC videogame is canon then it isn't. SWC is a "let's waste time" app game not a big budget game that has a real storyline to it. There currently isn't a Star Wars videogame out that falls into the new canon which is the following:
Episode I
Episode II
Clone Wars (animated movie and series)
Episode III
Rebels (animated series)
Episode IV
Episode V
Episode VI
All novels released starting with "A New Dawn"
All Marvel comics starting with Star Wars #1 from Jan 2015
Episode VII (coming soon)
All novels released starting with "A New Dawn"

I was wondering recently about how FFG's games fit into the current "canon policy". They certainly seem to be sticking with a certain group of stuff (which I would interpret as the most "mainstream" of EU) in terms of characters and ships, but it occurred to me that some of these things could now be "official" again. I played the old WEG roleplaying game waaaaay back, so I'm happy to see things like the Z-95 and VSD, and I'm sure fans of the various video games feel the same about the Defender or Phantom.
But Mara Jade? That's huge, isn't it? I know she must be pretty high on the popularity scale, but that's acknowledging the Zahn books. Or maybe it's no different than Farlander or Fel?

Gotta remember Disney's stand on these characters is that they may use them at anytime. Just once they introduce them that is were canon starts on them....they don't get to bring all thier EU baggage with them.

Is shadows of the empire no longe cannon?
As of now no. It would fall under the "Legends" line. Now we know from the Special Edition of Episode IV that the Outrider can be seen leaving Mos Eisley. So it has been seen and is canon just Dash and the rest of the Shadows cast has yet to be seen.
Edited by Bjorn RockfistDisney should make a Star Wars horror film with the death troopers. Star Wars is ripe for a true horror movie.

Lucas both acknowledged the books with the name "Coruscant", and disavowed them with the entire clone wars happening differently than Zhan outlined. So... :\

What is a FemTrooper?
First off, I was only half serious.
To actually answer your question, though: a Google image search on "FemTrooper" will show a bunch of cosplay women whose style of Stormtrooper costume is decidedly more "Pin-Up" than "canon". Not even going to get into opinions on that. Whatever. It's a thing.
The half-serious, half-joke part comes from the New Dawn book. Absolute mildest of spoilers here, tagged for the purists:
1) There's a part where some Stormtroopers, "one male and three female", walk into a bar. Written that way: explicitly, matter-of-factly. In reality, I assume this is just author embellishment, and my first thought was just, "Huh. Neat. I guess female ST are official now/again."
2) But then I thought, "Wait... How could the characters tell that they're female?" Unless it was, you know, obvious.
So maybe the cosplayers have it right? ![]()

The thing is though that the Heir to the Empire books don't actually say very much about the clone wars era. They imply a few things, but nothing that can't be explained by historical inaccuracies and 25 years Empire propaganda.
I'm not sure that appearance in Star Wars Commander (a pretty lame little game) makes anything cannon.
Though this is nice I have no interest in hearing from some corporate suite that the last 30odd years of cannon material is no longer to be considered canon just so some highly payed unimaginative dip-s**t director can have an easier time doing what he wants to an IP that's been around for the better part of 50 years
*canon*
Sorry, but it never was canon. LFL has always stated that the movies (and the later Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons) were the only things that were considered canon, prior to the Disney acquisition.
The basic rule has always been if it's seen on-screen then it's canon, anything else was liable to be thrown under the bus at the whims of Lucas.
Who cares about "canon" anyway? Does not having Dash Rendar "officially" in the Star Wars canon make those stories any less real? I'm going to be honest, Corran Horn is as real to me as Luke Skywalker. I still want to be Juno Eclipse when I grow up, whether she's stuffed in the Legends section of Wookieepedia or not. And I'm still going to collect as many Dunelizards as possible, regardless of whether or not Lucas, or anybody else thinks they're a "real" starfighter.
Edited by NightshrikeWho cares about "canon" anyway?
The only real purpose for Canon is for internal consistency. If X-Wing pilot Smith gets killed in one story, then shows up in a different one that takes place a few months later in universe time, then it's a bit jarring.
Or if Kyle Katarn is a Jedi in one story, but isn't in another one and is in fact unable to sense the force period, again it causes people to go "WTH??"
But honestly that's the only real meaningful purpose behind it.
For fan's, it has a similar yet different purpose. To give us an agreed upon set of facts. I don't see it here much, but on the SWTOR boards there's was a number of lengthy discussions on who was the most powerful force user, most powerful jedi, most powerful sith, ect...
If you wish to get involved in those kind of discussions you have to agree upon what actually happened, or else you can't really discuss let alone debate things. So things like head-canon have no place because it's not agreed upon by everyone.
It would be like trying to discuss history with someone who insists that the Goa'uld were the real driving force behind WWII.
