BattleLore tourney

By Xlyce, in Battlelore

So this is my third year of running a BattleLore tournament at our FLGC (Friendly Local Gaming Convention; ) happy.gif and I want to change it up a bit. The last two years I ran using the Call to Arms expansion, but I am thinking of using both the Dwarven Battalion and the Goblin Skirmisher Specialist packs.

What I am going to ask you guys is which expansion packs do you like the most?

Hundred Year's War and Scottish Wars. I really like the units that come with these expansions. They add a lot to my strategic decisions.

The reason I picked the other two is because then both sides get a neat gobbo or stunty thing. I could use Battle Cattle and Halberdiers but I am not sure it would have the same flavour as Gobbo Slingers and Stunty Axeswingers.

I like the Goblin expansion packs better than the Dwarf ones. That being said though, my favourite is the 100 years war expansion. I am toying with the idea of getting the troll expansion. Is it any good? There would have been a lot of extra value added to the $20 purchase had DOW included the card with the pack. I like that Fantasy Flight has provided the pdf of the card on the web, but I would much rather have a physical card that I could buy.

The Troll is a great creature, as good as or better than the Hill Giant, in my opinion. He rolls six die on an attack so he pretty much hits every time he swings his cleaver. He also regenerates lost life points every time he rolls a lore. The best way to beat him is to gang up on him and try to take him down in one turn before he can swing his cleaver.

I have also played both scenarios that come with the troll and really enjoyed them both. They are well thought out. There have been complaints that people don't like the paper maps because they don't come with new terrain features. While agree, the paper maps are necessary because there simply aren't enough terrain tiles in one base game to create the entire map as drawn. Another problem with the paper maps is the creases stick up a bit so figures have a more difficult time standing up when on a crease. I got my Troll pack for $13 and felt is was worth it at that price.

Also, I printed my Troll card out on photo paper and you honestly can't tell it isn't an original card unless you look real closely at the edges where I glued both sides of the card together. It really looks good!

Thanks for the input 14cross. I might pick this one up. Is there anything you can do to make the pieces lay on the paper better?

Get a piece of clear plastic or glass and lay it over the map. I played with the maps as is and had no real problems with it most of the time though.

I am finished the testing and ended up with the Hundred Years War as the scenarios. I like the restriction of the card set so it will be easier to teach any newcomers.

Cool!!! Good luck with the tourney. You chose a good expansion to use for it.

The tourney (IMNSHO) went well. The champion went undefeated throughout the game. He commented that the last scenario made him feel like there were advantages to the French attacking (which is what I wanted)..
