Which upgrade to use on Soontir Fel?

By Rasseman83, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Soontir Fel is my favourite pilot in the game. I trie to build my lists around him or at least save enough points on my other ships to ad him.

I've run him with hull + shield (if afordable) before. Now with the new wave out I've got some more options. Autothrusters and Stealth Device (all Firesprays sold out so no SD for me before).

So my question is wich upgrades to take. I will try out autothrusters (seems great)

and I'm choosing between hull upgrade and stealth device. Any sugestions?

The new M3-A, also comes with the stealth upgrade card. :)

I know. That's why I can finally use it now.

Stealth Device will a spectacular success in some games, and vanish on the first attack in other games. Hull Upgrade has a lower ceiling, but it's much more consistent.

Autothrusters and Stealth Device work really well together on Fel, makes him very slippery.

I played that in a tournament (with PTL) and in six games I only lost him once.

This. Here's my anecdotal 'evidence'. My last game in the SC this weekend pitted me up against somewhat of a mirror match (we both had Soontir Fel). Mine with PtL, autos & target comp and his with PtL, stealth and target comp (he said he didn't have any autothrusters yet). I gave him initiative so his Fel would move first and thereby got mine behind his. He wanted to attack my delta defender, and I'm sure he was hoping to get out of arc, but he was too close to an asteroid to use barrel roll, so he took evade and a focus from PtL stress. My Fel was able to boost into range 1 behind him and took target lock + focus from stress.

He shoots first at the delta (who has focus) and spends his focus for 2 hits + crit (range 2). I roll 1 evade and 1 eyeball, but I don't spend the focus hoping to capitalize on him having only one evade token left on his soontir (delta was unscathed prior to this shot). My Fel shoots next at range 1, and after spending my TL + focus, I have 2 hits + 2 crits. He rolls 4 green dice thanks to stealth and gets 3 evades (+1 evade token). Alright, a lucky roll, fine. My delta shoots next and with his focus scores 3 hits. Not bad. He rolls 4 green dice again and gets.....yep! 3 evades!

So for me, the take home lesson is that yes, stealth is awesome when your dice are incredibly lucky. But frankly, the statistical odds of him being unscathed in the above situation (which is not 'that' uncommon over the course of a typical game) is extremely slim. So basically, if your dice are hot, stealth device makes it so that you seem invincible, but eventually your dice will go cold (I would think anyway --- I've never had a tourney where I was able to roll incredibly well all 4+ games). Then when the luck turns against you, the stealth device fails and you die horribly. With that in mind, I feel its better to have hull or shield, since when your dice are hot, you don't actually need the stealth device (that's when its damage mitigation is best), but when your dice are cold, you really need something to protect you from damage. And stealth simply does not help you in that situation, so having extra 'health' to keep your cool ship on the table is really nice.

Soontir Fell's upgrade priority list:

1.) Push the Limit

2.) Soontir Fell Pilot Card

3.) Auto-thrusters

4.) Royal Guard Tie + whatever

Stealth device seems to be over-all the most effective secondary modifications given the insane number of mods Soontir will most likely have (at the very least, a focus).
