Does any one know where I can get a a real RPG tatical map board that I can draw on and erase and stuff like that, Right now im using a easle pad from staples with 1 inch inrements and its got 30 pages and is 3 feet by four feet. I want to know what everyone else uses to play.
Tatical map
I use a vinyl battlemat with inch squares on and have found it to work wonderfully. The mat is made for water-based pens meaning most felt-tips work on it (especially those made for children, meaning pens which make big bold, highly visible lines are pretty cheap and easy to come by in a number of colours), during games I keep a wet cloth and a dry cloth to wipe it down, the wet cloth erasing the pen and the dry cloth making it possible to re-write on the mat in seconds.
I got mine for about £20 from my FLGS, which might not help (unless you happen to live in Cambridge, UK) but a quick google reveals that they are easily available online at pretty low prices.
During gaming the mat makes for a centre piece and we sit around it. Players write their character's name on the sheet for quick reference (which is very useful early on in a campaign or if a PC has to be retired and replaced), and also their initiative during combat (which is even more useful).
I use a bog-standard whiteboard onto which I draw the map with water-soluble marker. I use random tokens for character markers, or in some cases, more marker-pen.
Or, If you've got an old laptop lying around, you can use Excel.
