- Is the required speed to do certain maneuvers?
- Is the Max speed rating of the ship to be able to perform certain maneuvers?
I actually think there are certain things a certain speed ship can and cannot do with actions and maneuvers.
But the speed rating is the top speed of the ship. You need to ask your PCs what speed they are going at from 0- X speed where X is the speed of the ship. There are maneuvers that change your speed up or down one and punch it goes to max speed for ship strain I believe. Why does this matter? Well...
If a tie fighter can go 4 and a freighter goes 3...the tie will want to be at 3 to continuously be behind or near the freighter to make shots on it. but let's say ...you need to kill that tie before it reaches its destination and your ship was at 1 speed while the tie was already at 4...that's a lot of catching up and a huge range band to cover...best bet is to use punch it take the strain to close the gap and take the shots. It's hard to visualize unless you draw it or use props.
You could for example use a toy or model of the ships and a measuring tape. Ship goes top speed 3 move it three inches and tie moves 4 inches etc.
Now think of this ...a tie has forward arc of shooting. Maybe you do too. He's behind you--- you use a maneuver first as your in the init list first. Maneuver to drop back one speed behind him and shoot. Now he's in front and either has to do the same or start making evasive maneuvers etc.
From what I see on the forums and my own experience is that star ship combat is pretty abstract.
Hi!
I have a quick question before a game about speed and Star Ship Maneuvers. The ones listed on page comes with a speed rating from 'Any' to '3+'. What does speed stand for on each description?:
- Is the required speed to do certain maneuvers?
- Is the Max speed rating of the ship to be able to perform certain maneuvers?
Thanks for the help!

That is the minimum speed the vehicle must be currently going to execute the maneuver.
Some maneuvers are simple, so anything capable of moving can do them. Some maneuvers require a vehicle that has an engine of a certain power and acceleration, and the vehicle be moving fast enough to be able to leverage it.
