Imperial Red Menace Stress Build

By Wretch, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I am a relatively new player and i am experimenting with different builds. I am intrigued by different control builds. Here is one of my attempts at an Imperial control build.

Kath Scarlet (38)
Calculation (1)
Flechette Cannon (2)
Rebel Captive (3)
Slave I (0)
Royal Guard Pilot (22)
Determination (1)
Autothrusters (2)
Stealth Device (3)
Royal Guard TIE (0)

Autothrusters (2)
Stealth Device (3)
Royal Guard TIE (0)
Total: 100
The basic idea is the most durable target creates stress in multiple ways stacking it on opponents while the interceptors, which hopefully will be hard to hit provide the punch.
I am very interested in what more experienced players think, especially what sort of builds it will struggle against.

Personally I would drop the Stealth Device's in favour of Push the Limit on the Royal Guards. You'll find that the arc dodging or tanking up will more durable than a temporary fickle green die.

I get that with mangler cannons and suchlike, crits are more common so determination becomes better, but is it really worth it for generic pilots?

Fletchette Cannon/Calculation is a nice idea.

If this attack hits, the defender suffers 1 damage and, if the defender is not stressed, it also receives 1 stress token. Then cancel all dice results.

When attacking, the defender receives 1 stress token if he cancels at least 1 Critical Hit result.

Depends if that interaction works (i.e. does the defender count as cancelling the criticals which make it past his defence dice). The ion cannon/missile has the same rule - is there a precedent with ion cannon/kath?

EDIT: Just checked the FAQ. apparently it doesn't; the cannon counts as the one cancelling the results. So, no automatic stress.

ninjaed by Magnus checking the FAQ :P

for Kath's ability, there was basically one way to go about it pre-Wave 6: Marksmanship + Gunner (the combo writes itself, I'd imagine)

Now you could also try Calculator/Mangler + Tactician.

Also, still not of the belief that RGPs are worth it without PTL, you just get so much out of it. I'd hack off Stealth device for PTL any day (and definitely auto-thrusters > stealth device, but I'm a sucker for guarantees)

So I have been working on this build after reading the feedback and thinking about the card interactions. I removed the flechette cannon as its result won't stack with Kath's ability. Here are the 2 build I am looking at. The first leaves the critical up to fate, but the Tie/Ins are harder to hit.

The second build uses the mangler cannon to get the crit and Lone Wolf to get some rerolls.

I went with expert handling over PTL because I wanted to avoid stress from PTL but get additional actions, and it shakes TLs.

Tactician is an option but I like the idea of making my opponent pick their poison with their high PS ships (i.e. Phantom w/ VI) , hard to hit Tie/Ins or stress inducing captive.

I leaning towards the second build.

I plan on flying an imperial Kath with Mangler Canon, Calculation, and Rebel Captive. Should deal out plenty of stress.

Why expert handling? You already have barrel roll on your interceptors and expert handling won't let you do two actions. The only ships expert handling is usefull on is ships without barrel roll.

Thinking that Expert Handling gives you an extra actions seems to be a common mistake with new players. When you use your action to take the "Expert Handling" action you are allowed to take a Barrel-Roll action and remove a target lock. The "Expert Handling" action is being take in lieu of one of the actions on your action bar; not in addition to one of those actions. Because Expert Handling instructs you to take a Barrel-Roll action instead of performing a Barrel-Roll. This prevents a ship with the Barrel-Roll action that receives an extra action from somewhere from being able to Barrel-Roll twice in a round.

Outside of some very specific situations that require using an action that is not on your action bar, Expert Handling does nothing for ships that have Barrel-Roll natively other than letting them remove a target lock.

Ok I thought you can get a second action with EH. Thanks for the correction.

I guess it's PTL or stealth and I will drop lone wolf for calculation to fit the points.

How do you plan on filling out the rest of the list?
