Target Lock: reacquiring new TL if you have one

By xvc, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

I have question about reacquiring new target lock:

Situation goes as follows, i was playing a tournament where all players were having this rule: Lets say I have target lock on ship A (i'm not using it - it's still on) and in next round I want to target lock another ship lets say ship B - loosing target lock on ship A and having it now on ship B. Is that legit?

Till that day I was playing that unless you spend target lock on ship A it stays on ship A till the ship is gone or I'll use it.

Which one is correct?

THX

Core Rulebook, page 9:

Each ship capable of performing this action can maintain only one target lock...Target lock tokens are only removed if the locking ship either acquires a target lock on a different ship or spends the target lock during the Combat phase.

You can lock another ship if you wish, which removes the lock from the previous ship.

THX, found it also there, just forgot to close that one.

Although not what is asked it may be worth mentioning that you can not acquire a TL on a ship you already have a TL on.

If you have Dutch and he has a TL on ship A he can not simply acquire a new TL on ship A to trigger is ability unless he had previous lost the TL on ship A.

What is it that prevents reaquiring TL on the same ship?

I knew you couldn't, but at last tournament I couldn't recall why and couldn't find the rule.

Didn't help that no one else there had heard of this, so I just let it slide.

Page 17 of the current FAQ (v2.2.3):

Q: If a ship already has a target lock on an enemy ship, can the locking ship acquire a target lock again on the same enemy ship in order to trigger a game effect (such as “Dutch” Vander)?
A: No.
