Need help, peg broken into base of Slave I model

By Bulwyf, in X-Wing

So playing tonight the top plastic peg that goes into the bottom of the ship model broke off while I was inserting the peg. Looking at the peg I can see a fractured line going through the peg that made it so when any pressure was put on the peg to go into the base of the ship it would break. I now have the top part of the peg is stuck into the base of the ship. Please help. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get this broken peg out.The break is completley flush with the base of the ship so I can't use my jewelers's screwdrivers to kinda pry it out or jimmy it out with slow turns.

Appreciate any help as I really do not want to have to buy another Slave I esp. since they seem to be asking insane prices for that particular model these days.

iirc people have had success with a tiny (TINY!) dot of superglue on the broken peg (reattaching it to the main part of the peg) before, but I haven't had to do it myself so take that with a grain of salt and get independent confirmation.

Rip the whole thing off your model, cut a large peg in half, glue it to the Slave 1 in the exact same spot as the old one was, and BAM you are back in business.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "rip the whole thing out"?

I heated up a needle and put it into the broken peg and am letting it cool. Once it is done I am going to try and see if I can turn the needle with pliers and get the broken peg top out of the ship base. Then I only need a new peg. My wife and I play extensively and this was a new model with a defective peg. Really kinda bummed.

YES!

In the future this actually worked: heated up a needle by candle with a pair of pliers then inserted it into the broken peg. Wait until it cools and then gently move the needle with pliers while applying gentle pressure. It will in fact pop out of the ship base. You are only out one needle and one broken peg.

Thanks for the suggestions regardless.

Grats on the fix. This might be the story I need to hear to get me to magnetize my fleet.

Nice moves.

I was going to suggest drilling into the peg with a fine drill. Put some glue on a paper clip, jam it in the new peg hole, wait ten minutes and pull it out.

Hot needle was brilliant!

That was the first thing that popped into my mind as well. Glad that an alternative fix was found.

That was going to be the next thing I tried but I thought a hot needle would be enough to penetrate the plastic base top stuck in the ship base and then it would simply be a matter of gently turning it around while pulling it out to see if would just pop out on its own. And thank God it did.

I kinda scoffed at the guys who did that in my local gaming store but after this I think I might have to do it. The peg I got with the ship was already faulty with a hairline fracture running through it. Any pressure put on it to put it into the ship caused it to break off. Kinda makes me worried about my other ships pegs.

Take a small drill bit and make a shallow pilot hole in the peg that is broke off in there. Then take a small screw just a bit bigger than the drill bit and just thread it in, and then slowly work the piece out. May take some time, but it will work.

The key is to get a small enough bit and screw as to not expand the peg which will make it tighter and be harder to get out.

I tried as much as I could to type that so it didn't sound dirty.....

Replace it with a magnet :P
