Strategy

The BTL Y-Wings are extremely powerful jousters, but they lack maneuverability and are susceptible to arc dodgers. Kath, of course, has a deadly rear arc. Combined with her 3 actions per turn (Focus, TL & Evade/Boost), she can often one-shot 2-3 agility targets. The strategy for this list is to lead with the Warthogs, letting Kath protect the rear.

Asteroid placement is very helpful for this build. Your convoy very effective to the front and back, but is susceptible to attacks from the side. You want to create a narrow corridor surrounded by asteroids, forcing opponents to approach you from an angle covered by your arcs.

Once you fly in the corridor, simply fly down it slowly (Y-Wings going 2 straight, Kath going 1), performing K-turns as needed to reposition. Don't be afraid to use the Y-Wings to block. See maneuver section below for dealing with specific situations.

Maneuvers

You want to fly this list in a loose convoy. Y-wings should be in front, with about 1/4 of a base separating them. Kath flies directly behind, just over one base length from the Y-wings.

This gives you two kill zones - to the front you have 5 attacks, and to the rear you have Kath's aux arc and bomb. Anything approaching from either of those angles should die quickly. The only safe approach is from the side, but that 1) should be very difficult due to asteroid placement, and 2) they won't be able to hang out in the side arc since ships can't move sideways - they have to move somewhere, and this will typically put them in your rear arc.

The following maneuvers will prove useful with this build (if someone could illustrate using Vassal that'd be awesome):

Straight Ahead:

Y-Wings 2, Kath 1

This moves the convoy ahead while maintaining the distance between Kath and the Ys, clearing any stress and allowing Kath to take her free TL. You can also do 3/2 or 4/3 (gives the Ys a stress). You can increase or decrease the distance between the Ys and Kath by varying the numbers.

Reverse:

Turn 1: Y-Wings 4K, Kath 1

Turn 2: Y-Wings 1, Kath 3K

This sequence allows to to turn the entire convoy without collision. This is my go-to response to a threat from the side or rear. Note that after the first move you have both Ys and Kath's rear arc all facing aft.

Double Front:

Y-Wings 3, Kath 3K

This allows you to concentrate your firepower to the front. I generally avoid this one unless I want to split the force for mop-up maneuvers, since it makes it difficult for the Ys to catch up to Kath and places them behind Kath for the remainder.

Strong/Weak Matchups

This build does well against 2-4 ship builds, particularly those using large base ships. YT-1300s and Decimators die very quickly when faced with the number of red dice this list can throw. Phantoms tend die fairly quickly, unless they catch you out in the open.

Bad matchups for this squad include large Tie-swarms (one of the few builds with more attack dice and hitpoints than this one), and Super-Dash (his ability to move through asteroid fields your corridor useless).

Personally, I don't like BTL. It takes away an advantage the the Y-wing has.

That's what I thought originally too. But I think if you test it out you'll find that BTL adds as much (or more) than it takes away.

Specifically, BTL makes a Y-Wing an absolute beast against large turret lists. While the stock y-wing plus ion turret is a decent counter to small maneuverable ships, the BTL is arguably the best jouster in the game... Provided that you can protect its flank.

I came up with the exact same list about 20 min ago

How many games have you played

Win/lose ratio?

I haven't had much time to play test a lot of builds I've come up with

Getting ready for tournament next weekend

After that it back to fun casual lists

takes away a weakness, too (1 piddly damage a shot)

I like the list, as it's basically the same thing I was planning on running :P (though I had the 2 points spent on the charge re-purposed for Feedback, love me some guarantees :D)

I've played 5 games with it, with a perfect record so far. The only thing to give it trouble so far was a 5 interceptor swarm, but I ended up winning with one y-wing left.

The trick seems to be setting up the battlefield. If you can setup the asteroids such that you have a safe corridor through the middle (minimizing attacks from your left and right) it's devasting.

I'll give it a try after next weekend hopefully

So many lists to try out

nice list. i think i'm going to have to try it out

i'm looking for tournament worthy lists to try out and i seem to be having no luck with scum

when it comes to empire i can build them with my eyes closed.. scum however, that requires a lot of brain power it seems

Part of the reason might be that scum plays much more like the rebels than the empire. As a primarily empire player myself, I definitely understand the difficulty in shifting gears.

i think it depends on what you're flying, the scyk's and the starviper fly like empire where as the Y-wings, Hwks and Z's are well.. Y wings, Hwks and Z's. the only real new ship to fly is the Aggressor as it's a completely different style of play and the true Unique ship to Scum

all in all i'd say that Scum is a good Mix of the 2 factions with a little twist of its own

the hilarious part of all of it is that i have only flown Y's a handful of times and never picked up the Hwk or Z's until scum

have to disagree on the viper

it flies like a B-wing with its red maneuvers removed (that is to say, like Keyan Farlander) only difference being it is far more durable.

except it can also boost.. and lack of red maneuvers means you are likely to use them all the time rather than rarely.. so there's that

no. not like a B wing at all

tried the list today. i royally suck with Y wings

too much imperial play makes basic ships go BOOM!

on a positive note though i tried something sort of similar only different. worked out alright against a dual IG-2000 list. opponent made a crucial mistake that put him on a rock and basically cost him the game at that point. but i'm still optimistic about the list and eager to give it a few more go's

Kath Scarlet w/ PtL, EU, K4SD and I.D. (i felt seismic charges are a waste of points when inertial dampeners is too strong of an option to pass up)
Syndicate Thug w/ unhinged aggromech and autoblaster turret

Ventarii Point Veteran w/ Predator, SU, scyk title and mangler cannon

The Y-wings take some getting used to. Something that helps me is avoiding the temptation to over-maneuver. Ideally, the only maneuvers your y-wings should need as straight 1, straight 2 and 4 k. I also recommend slow playing at the start - let them come to you. Once in range, maximize the number of shots you get by flying slow for 1-2 turns then pulling your k once the get out of your part

i'll try your advice and give it another go. what about kath? i have a feeling i'm flying firesprays wrong myself as well

give me ties and i'll dance circles around you. give me a firespray and i'll fumble around the mat and have shots for only half the match.. stupid asteroids!

I posted this list a few days ago, ran Scarlet a bit different with gunner. Only had a chance to play 2 games but both times wow is it fu, first game my opponent was chasing my firespray, I slow do and dropped my bomb, poof goes three of his ships!! Second game he split his four ship list up and tried to pick off the y's. They held thier own, Kath pulled a slingshot engaged and got them in rear arc, poof they went. Love this combo alot. I am thinking of dropping the bomb, adding ion to the y's and turning Kath into fett just to see how it goes.

Forgot to add, I named the list... Lady and the tramps. Guys out here love it!
