So I proxied a few cards and ran these two lists today against one another to see which would be harder to kill, comprising both lists of traditionally tough characters (plus a random Firespray):
Rebels:
YT-1300: Han Solo (46)
- Marksmanship (3)
- Cluster Missiles (4)
- C-3PO (3)
- Lando Calrissian (3)
- Millennium Falcon (1)
- Experimental Interface (3)
X-Wing: Luke Skywalker (28)
- Lone Wolf (2)
- R5-P9 (3)
- Shield Upgrade (4)
Total: 100
Imperials:
TIE Advanced: Darth Vader (29)
- Stay on Target (2)
- TIE/x1 (0)
- Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
TIE Interceptor: Soontir Fel (27)
- Royal Guard TIE (0)
- PTL (3)
- Stealth Device (3)
- Autothrusters (2)
Firespray: Bounty Hunter (33)
Total: 100
It was the longest game I have ever played (wasn’t watching the clock exactly, but it took me all morning), with more defense than I have ever seen in a match—with no evades needed on rolls, these guys make their own luck! I did not play with a time limit, and I was also playing against myself, so it was definitely just a “for fun” match, but I thought I would share the results.
Here is how the game went for those who care:
The Bounty Hunter was the first casualty, focused down by Luke and Han near the beginning. Han also lost his shields and two hull during the first phase of the game as all three Imperials pounded on him, but with Lando, C-3PO, and the evade from the Falcon, he was dodging at least three hits per combat phase.
In the mid-game, Vader forced through an “Injured Pilot” critical hit on Han, which was devastating for the Rebels, but Vader in turn went down to return fire. Soontir was now alone, but unscathed, and Han had two hull left while Luke was undamaged. The next combat phase Soontir slipped in to range one for a desperation attack on Han, and managed to squeeze one critical hit past Han’s defenses; of course it was a Direct Hit for the kill. In return, though, Han and Luke finally managed to slip through a hit of their own, stripping away Soontir’s stealth device, making that round one of the craziest combat phases in the game.
The end-game consisted of Luke and Soontir circling one another and making passes for over 20 turns (I lost count eventually). Luke would take a hit or two here and there and simply regenerate the shields, while Soontir was dancing out of arc or making himself virtually unhittable at range three. Eventually Luke caught Soontir at range two and landed a critical hit. The crit turned out to be a Control Thruster Fire, which dealt Soontir an additional stress along with the damage. As a result, Soontir was unable to remove his stress the ensuing round, and Luke finally was able to close the game.
A couple of notes (again for those who care):
Vader is always tanky in his Advanced, but he didn’t even really stand out as evasive when compared to the other named pilots in this game. Luke with Lone Wolf and regen capabilities is another well-documented/theorycrafted ship, so I won't talk about him here.
That said, I will talk about Soontir, even though he is also well-documented and theory-crafted. I ran him this way for the first time and was blown away. At range three, Soontir is virtually unhittable for a three-dice ship attacking alone even without his stealth device. With it, he becomes a beast outside of range one. At range three, only a rolled result of all blanks allows anything through. While I knew this to be true in theory, it wasn’t until I saw it in practice that I realized how powerful it really was. He is so slippery with PTL that you can almost guarantee you will be at range three or out of arc all of the time. It was fun to fly!
Finally: Han. He survived so much damage it was ridiculous. I have been avoiding fat Falcons for some time, but decided to see it for myself. The build above obviously guarantees two evades per turn with the Falcon and C-3PO, and if you roll for Lando, you are only adding to that total. I have seen some hate for Lando, but I think he is worth his points in this set-up. Han was almost untouchable once it was down to just one attacker, and in one round he had nine dice thrown at him and evaded all seven hits rolled. I know that is a statistical anomaly, but it is still ridiculous.
Anyway, it was interesting, and fun to run both lists. Now to test drive them against a swarm…
Anybody else have extra-dodgy pilots they like to run?
