Preparing For My First Vassal Game

By CruzinToVictory, in X-Wing

So I downloaded Vassal about a week ago and haven't played a game yet. What should I do to be ready before finding an opponent and playing a game?

I read somewhere online a tutorial about setting up a log to load your build, so I can prepare something like that, but is there anything else I should know/do beforehand? I played around with it a bit on my own so I know most of the functions, but that's it. I just don't want to hold back the person I'm playing against.

Thanks in advance!

I too am looking to play my first vassal game. Most people online are helpful, but It would be great to play against someone who could help you out.

If you find someone let me know.

Than ks,

See this thread. It has a list of regulars that are willing and able to teach new players the ins and outs of Vassal. If you see them online, don't hesitate to ask them for a game. You may even be able to PM one of them on the forums to set up a time. If I'm online you can flag me down for a game, too, but I'm not on as much as I used to be.

Thanks guys. I just tried to play my first game and gave up. I logged in, and found an opponent. So, I tried to create a game by typing the name into the "New Room" box and hitting enter. Nothing happened. I waited a few seconds and tried again. Nothing again.

So, he said he'd create a room. Eventually I saw his room, went to join and BOOM, the room I created popped up. Fine, no big deal, I'll just join his room. So I right click and hit Join Game, and nothing happens. 30 seconds later it puts me in the room and says "Syncronizing". Finally it syncs, and the map button is greyed out. My opponent said it should pop up asking me to pick a player number, but no luck. Then my messages to him started showing up in grey and he didn't seem to be getting them. No idea what I'm doing wrong but man that was frustrating!

Before telling another player you want to play a game make sure you have a squad saved. If you have no squad save and can't figure it out ask someone in the mailroom to help explain it. You will likely find a friendly player will to chat with you and help you save the squad. From there learn as many hot keys as possible but it's not necessary for playing.

I see your old room. Get back on and try again!

While this is generally good advice, I will not expect a player new to Vassal to have already figured out squad building. I would be more than happy to help you along with that part as well.

I loaded back in to try again and after 30 seconds or so this is what my lobby looks like:

Edit: After a few minutes, the lobby showed up. I right clicked Join Game on that room and this is what it looks like now:

Yeah, that shouldn't be happening. Weird...

Really weird. When I look at the list of people in Vassal, you're not there, but according to the server report, you are still logged in in the "Cruzin vs Wiry" room. Try hitting the black button above "Active Games" to close the server, wait a few minutes, then hit the arrows to connect to the server again.

LOL Here's a gem. After doing that it now shows me as in the Main Romm AND in that room. Sigh

Unfortunately, that's quite normal when there are server hiccups like this. Eventually the fake you that got dropped will disappear. Just join your previous room and see how it goes.

Edit: Sorry I couldn't help. Off to bed now. May the Force be with you!

Ok, I might know what's going on. I think you might have a bunch of extensions from an older version of the X-wing Module installed.

The only files you should have are the following:

Star_Wars_X-Wing_Miniatures_Game-5.2.3.vmod

Universal_Map_Pack_1.0.vmdx

These other 3 map packs are optional:

Gabriel's_Map_Pack_-5.0.0.vmdx

Crazy_Toms_Playmats_-5.0.0.vmdx

Yagyu's_Map_Pack_-5.0.0.vmdx

From your screen shot it looks like you've installed the old ship extensions. It says "unable to load extension A-Wing booster 4.6.0.vmdx", those files are no longer used, everything is built into "Star_Wars_X-Wing_Miniatures_Game-5.2.3.vmod" now. So you're probably getting an error from this. There have been some major changes/refinements to the module since version 4.6.0.

In Vassal's "Module Library", you should be able to view the extensions loaded into the X-wing Module, right click and choose "Deactivate" for everything but the map packs.

PS: I usually don't install the 3 optional map packs, but occasionally if I join a room that another player created, and they chose a map from one of these 3 packs, I wont be able to see it. In that case I just tell them I can't see the map and one of us will create another room. It's a pain, but I prefer a slimmer installation.

That might have done the trick! It all loaded much faster after doing that, so hopefully whe I find an opponent it will work now. Thanks for the help.

Does anyone have a mirror for the Star_Wars_X-Wing_Miniatures_Game-5.2.3.vmod file? Maybe drop it into a public dropbox folder?

The download off of the Vassal webpage is incredibly slow and frequently drops the connection. For a 30mb file it takes approximately 2 hours at 5-10kb/sec, except that it usually drops the connection at the 3-6mb mark.

If I'm actually able to finish the download, I'll at least rehost it.

(edit) I was finally able to download it in the evening. If you try at all during the day, you're simply SOL. Anyone can download the 5.2.3 vmod from my dropbox:
