I often find myself forgetting effects that come out of the regular order like ACD, rebel captive, or Ysanne. Does anyone else have a problem with this? Have you come up with any creative solutions to help you remember?
Any tips on how to not forget
Have you tried a Pavlovian pain feed back system? Every time you forget have someone kick you in the nuts you'll soon find you never forget anything ever again.

If you value your genitals, however, I recommend writing it all out

And carry pens and paper around? Sounds a bit painful to me.
Honestly, don't allow yourself to take forgotten actions. As soon as you remember you can remind yourself but don't let your opponent give you the action. It's the best way to learn in my opinion. Once it costs you a few games you start remembering.

testicular trauma works too of course, but Atomic's suggestion might lead to grandchildren some day
The only time when negative consequence will help you to better remember something is when they are more severe than the lack of the consequence would be and severe enough to make you remember that specific instance and the pain involved. Unless you are playing for money, this is rarely true in a game of X-Wing. Besides, the process of being reminded and/or realizing your mistake immediately is much more important than whether or not you ultimately take that action. Deny yourself forgotten actions if you want, but don't expect that to make a meaningful difference.
What you can do that will actually help is to play more. You will become more familiar with the game sequence and the cards that you use, which will make it easier to fall into a routine of doing everything in the order required by the rules. If you want to solve the issue immediately, make a checklist and follow it for each turn. This will make it almost impossible to forget anything and it will also help you to automatically take a checklist approach even when you play without everything written out.
Edited by RaptureJust write ACD, FCS, etc on the back of your hand with a Sharpie. Save your balls some pain...
Write it on the back of your hand with a dry erase marker (just as bold as a sharpie, a million times easier to wash off)
If I run a ship with Rebel Captive, I place a Star Wars miniature (from WotC) on the base if it's a large ship. It's the Peace Brigade Thug figure, and I painted the base red so it stands out more, I selected him for the pose and because he kind of looks like the prisoner in the card art, though there might be better figures out there with a more prisoner-y look (a McGoohan figure would be sweet!)

I did this after a friend and I played nearly an entire game with neither of us remembering his RC.

Is something like this legal in a competitive environment? What is legal to bring to the table? I've seen those maneuver cards, has anyone played a game where their opponent complained about them?

I want to win tournaments and play at a high level. Last year I forgot to shoot with a ship, it was the last to shoot anyway and we were just planning our next moves. We didn't finish placing our dials and I remembered and asked if I could attack. He said no and the next round was the last round due to time and he barely escaped. My attack could have won me the game and sent me to to the top 16. Instead I took 18th and have never forgotten anything like that since.
If you care about playing better force yourself to learn from your mistakes.
One trick I know is to assign actions even when it doesn't make a difference. Example focus on the first turn when no ships are in range. Get the habit in and then you won't forget.
This is a good topic, something I really need to get right, I hope more tips are added.

This is a good tactic. If you're concerned about legality in tournaments, just pull out your trusty multi-use tracking tokens from the core set. They're great!
One trick I've found is that if I am waiting for a trigger that will result in a token, I pick up the corresponding token and hold onto it. For Rebel Captive, you could pick up a stress token with your dominant hand so that when you reach for the agility dice you see the stress token in your hand to remind yourself. This trick has been mentioned in a different thread, but he said he still forgot sometimes. I think practice is ultimately the best way to get it right, but I'm leaning a little bit more towards AtomicFryingPan's method. After all, practice makes permanent - only perfect practice makes perfect.
Edited by ParakitorI find that forgetting in a tournament, when it would have made a real critical difference, is the best way to burn it into your brain with such searing force that you'll never forget. Just to be safe though, add a double face palm to really reinforce it after using this technique.

Anyone who has ever almost made a mistake that would have cost them their life can explain to you that the actual consequence is not necessary for the experience to be internalized and avoided in the future. Most adults are perfectly capable of conceptualizing a consequence without suffering it.
Edited by Rapturethe best way is to forget and suffer
then, you'll never forget again
For things like Ysanne or ACD, I'll just hold the tokens until I put them down. For AdvS and Bombs I'll place the dial closer to the ship than I normally would, like almost touching it.
Practice what you play. I have found that it is when I add a different option to the mix that I forget. If you practice the list you create a habit. It is just like sports, you play as you practice create good habits in practice and they carry over to the real thing.
It is really hard to remember those extra or free stresses sometimes. The rebel mini captive is actually a good idea.
Even in casual play is super annoying to have both yourself and your opponent forget a stress from the captive, then halfway through the next turn they tell you that you actually have stress because of it.
The mechanic needs something to help players remember to give out the stress at the appropriate time. In casual play we houserule if YOUR forget to hand out stress from one of your cards then you lose out. (also assuming the opponent honestly forgets). But if I understand correctly in a tournament its your OPPONENTS job to remember to stress.
I know a few folks who won't take a stress token from Rebel Captive unless you specifically tell them to every time, even though it's not optional at all. Pretty annoying.
One game I played versus a Chiraneau with Mara and Rebel Captive, I was so worried about positioning and whatnot with my Phantom that I was forgetting to take my freebies sometimes (ACD I remembered, free focus and free TL from FCS I forgot at least once), and I know the opponent got away without stressing himself from my Rebel Captive 2-3 (or possibly more) times in that game.
I know 99% of this is on me as the player with the upgrade cards, but I go out of my way to remind opponents of these things when they forget, so it's kinda frustrating sometimes when they don't reciprocate. Ideally I won't be making those mistakes as much now that I have some practice with Whisper, but man those first few games it was a lot to remember. Probably should have used her once or twice before taking her to a tournament, lol ![]()

Buy one of these and place him next the ship that has the RC on board. It's a cake topper so the scale should be fine!
Put one of these next to the ship that has Issard to remind you who you picked up at that last truck stop"

Having problems remembering to re-cloak after attacking? Put one of these guys next to you model to remind you. It wont be confusing at all, I promise you.
