Does FFG still have a number of ships cap for this game?

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

If I remember correctly, because I sometimes don't, I believe it has been stated that this game was planned for only 30 -32 different ships.

right now including the epic ships we have 24 different ships. 21 without.

so my question is, do we see them going above this number due to the popularity of this game? is this game a fad that will die off soon after they release the final ship that they plan to release? should they slow their roll and release fewer ships a year and satisfy us with reprinted ACE's style packs?

I would like this game to reach the epic position it deserves as a long running and constantly growing game and community. I would like it to kick GW's ass also.

heck they made the raider up totally.. which is cool and means they can keep making things up as far as i am concerned..lol besides there are at least 2 dozen Tie fighter configurations that haven't been touched yet..lol

Tie avenger/aggressor/aggravator/augmentor/allinator/oppressor/interloper/mauler/mix master/manipulator/mangler/max/neutralizer/ballistic/blaster/BO/shrike/SRAM/tempest/ tremor/trance/trump to name a few off the top of my head...

I for one would be just fine with lots more Aces packs to help balance out what we have. There are too many ships in my collection that simply aren't used and that's a real shame. I'd rather have a diverse collection of useful ships than have 10 ships that see play and a bunch of space-wasters

with scum, I see me using hwk more now. also fs31.

I never pull out my bombers, to much of a point sink, it is my new TIE advanced as far as point to usefulness rating.

y-wing is also really customizable now.

imagine this if you will:

battle for yavin set - you get 2 x-wings and 1 y-wing for the rebels. then 3 TIES and 1 TIE advanced for imperials. some new cards and a playmat.

battle of endor - you get 1 falcon 1 a-wing and 1 b-wing. also 1 shuttle and 2 TIE interceptors and a playmat

if the upgrade cards were cool enough I am so in.

I don't recall ever seeing anything about a ship cap - but then I fail to recall things from time to time too.

I think FFG have got a difficult balancing act on their hands in the medium term though.

On the one hand there's a need to keep things new and fresh - on the other hand the further they have to delve into Legends / Expanded Universe for new ships, the less immediately recognizable as Star Wars it becomes - and let's face it, although there are some gems out there, there's plenty in the EU that is distinctly sub-par, so FFG do need to tread carefully.

So Yeah - I think Aces packs are probably the way forward in terms of keeping what is most iconic about the game and the franchise relevant - and why not? There's no reason for there to be only 2 or 3 named pilots for the ships we know and love from the OT.

Of course there's a new installment coming in less than a year - and there will be plenty of pre-release information coming out - and no reason to expect FFG not to be granted a license for that considering what a great job they have done so far.

So there's every reason to be optimistic.

The 30 or so total ships was a rumor floating around...last year?... But as far as I know it was never based on any official statements from FFG.

I do think the original rumor was that, when they were first planning the game, they had 30 or so ships in mind to do for it, not that there were 30 ships planned out in advance and then the game would be over, just when they first made up a list of what ships they could do, that list had 30 or so entries.

I can see X-wing making it to at least Wave 12. If you look at the amount of ships that could be added from Star Wars Galaxies alone, you can see how possible this really is. Especially for the Scum faction, there was quite a few Hutt and Black Sun ships in that game. I don't mind the look of most of those ships either including the Tie Oppressor or the Kihraxz ships.

X-wing is their golden goose, even if they originally had plans for only a certain amount of ships, x-wing far exceeded their expectations, the constant demand supports that. FFG are going keep this going as long as they can and long as their keep making quality products we're all in for the long haul as well.

They had that many planned at the time. That doesn't mean they planned to end the game at that point, just that they hadn't gotten to planning more ships at that point.

It does bring up the question though. How many ships can they release for each faction while keeping the faction distinct and making each ship unique within that faction? Would FFG have to start releasing new rules with each wave to create new niches for ships, or would we see more aces style packs?

While I doubt they have an actual cap for the number of ships for X-wing, there is a conceivable limit to the number of new ships they can release for each faction.

Hel-Nah... WELCOME TO THE FUTURE!

:D

Think about how different Scum Hwks are from Rebel Scum Hwks. A lot of what makes a faction feel different is the pilot abilities, not the ships. I can imagine a scum-only YT-2400 title that reduces the attack dice of all opponents in range 1-2. That would feel so amazingly different from SuperDashHLC that you'd be hard pressed to remember that they're in the sane ship.

So: how many ships can FF release before factions lose their identity? A lot!

There was originally a 12 same ship limit and then with large base ships they put in for no more than 6 of the same ship.

However I think that has been changed recently to 8 for small ships and 4 for large ships.

With epic there is the epic point limit which limits it down to 2 epic ships.

2, 4, 8, anyone else see a pattern?

We will be allowed either 16, or 64 stormtroopers, is what you're saying.

16 AT-AT 32 AT-STs and 64 storm troopers. Oh and to complete the cycle throw in 1 star destroyer.

I think people are mis-quoting or mis-remembering a talk at the May the 4th event in 2013 where Steve Horvath talked about "at least" so and so ships in mind, not "only" so and so. I talk to the FFG guys a lot and I have never heard anything like a arbitrary cap on number of ships.

well that's good to hear

Along the same lines that Hexis said... pretty sure the actual quote was that they had 32 (or whatever number it was) ships in mind. So not a limit, but that's what they had already thought of. So, by now that number could be much higher.

Saying that, I don't want them to keep going forever with more and more obscure ships. I'd rather see Aces packs with new pilots and colour schemes. I'm more likely to buy a repainted ship I have heard of than a random ship I've never heard of.

Unfortunately, many of the ships we already have, I never heard of! But I agree, I hope they don't end up dragging the bottom of the barrel for obscure ships just to keep it alive at some point!

I'll be expensive, but on the upside you could always live inside it when you aren't playing

There will be more than 32 ships. That can almost be guaranteed.

No one ever officially said anything about a ship limit. This game is like printing money for FFG right now. They'll ride it until the bitter end.

X-Wing makes up a 1/3rd of their business; that statement was made before that was the case. Do you honestly think FFG would stop making content for a game that comprises 30% of their business??

No faith in the bombers... shame. for shame.

I will happily take any and all additions to this great game.

Yes more ACE's packs to help the ships that don't see huge amounts of table time.

Yes to more ships be it EU or PT/JJ junk
