Regional bye

By Red Castle, in X-Wing

I've never been to a Regional before and since I will attend my first this year and finished first in a Store Championship, I was wondering how exactly the first round bye works.

-Is it that you skip the first round and get an automatic win?

-If so, is the MoV set at 150pts like a normal bye?

-If so, how is it better than playing your first match and getting a better MoV? Is the insurance of winning your first match really offset the possibility of getting a better MoV?

good question, I am in the same boat as you.

Last years byes were super-byes - a 100-0 win and your opponent won every game - but there hasn't been any announcement of whether this year's byes will be the same.

Who gets the buy? Is it just 1st place?

1st place in a SC gives you 1st round bye in a regional

1st place in regional gives you 1st round bye in national

Don't know if it then carries over to World or not.

Well last year's Regional was before we switched to MOV right? So i assume it would follow standard rules for a Store Championship. What did your TO's do when you had an odd number of players?

The Bye you earn at an SC will grant you full MoV and full SoS.

Is it bye or is it buy because your using two unrelated words so please make up your minds.

Isn't there a saying about glass houses? ;)

It is, in case folks really weren't sure, "bye." Also, though, it is "you're."

You automatically win your first game with a 200 MoV and the system assumes that the "ghost opponent" in that first "game" won every other game played during swiss.

Sweeeeeeettttt!! That is a huge advantage! So not only do we not have to play the first round, we can also afford to lose a match (or maybe even 2) and still make the top cut.

Last year, Store Champs got free entry into the regional's. Is that a venue/TO decision? or does FFG guarantee free entry to the regional's event?

Because in my area, regional's this year is going to cost around $40 bucks! Last year it was $20 and I got free entry.

$40??? Why in the world is it so expensive? Do they give you free food and drinks?

No free entry that I know of. I played in 5 Regionals last year. The most expensive one was $20. $40 seems excessive.

MOV only matters if you plan on losing a game.............Don't lose a game!

Yeah you need a good AC system because that gets really hot in summer.

Thanks for the clarification guys. Looks like I'm gonna spend the first round scouting the tables then.

Stupid question, (well, not really, because I don't know), but what does MoV stand for?

It is bye, and I believe I only used this word.

Margin of Victory

Oh my gosh, I really do feel stupid now...:face palm:

There are two in my area, one is offering lunch and a big first place prize (outside FFG's prize pack) and something else. The other is a part of an existing GT circuit, so we are essentially paying for entry into that event to participate in the regional's. (The original price for the GT regional's was $55 bucks! But that blew up on FB pretty fast. lol)

1. You can only receive 1 Regional bye this year even if you win multiple store championships. Last year, you could've won multiple store championships and gotten multiple first round byes.

2. I believe if you win Nationals you do receive a first round bye at Worlds.

Deltmi where did you see that you can only win one, if that is the case that would mean my 2nd place finish last week at an SC would have given me a bye since the 1st place winner already won one.
