I've always loved remakes - weather it's a cover of an old song, or a remake of an old film. I consider it a tribute to the original work, and also don't mind a fresh take on it with updated effects, film quality, and the ability to address old mistakes. Like for example, Why in the heck does Luke have the last name "Skywalker" if they are trying to hide him from his father? Shouldn't he be going by the name "Luke Lars"? Have Ben tell him "Your real name is Luke Skywalker, and your father was Anakin Skywalker" - then he coudl use that name the rest of the movie or something... but it just screams crazy for him to publicly go around saying "Hi, I'm Luke Skywalker" for 19 years if he was supposed to be hidden.
I would love to see the original Star Wars Trilogy get re-made someday. But instead of just a scene for scene remake, I'm thinking they could throw a monkey wrench in there and change something - something huge.
- Imagine if Obi-Wan killed Vader on the Death Star - how would everything else have played out? Luke woudl have had a different Mentor - and Obi-Wan would have also met Leia, on basically the same day that he met Luke - so their training could have started the same day. Additionally with Vader out of the picture, the Imperials wouldn't have found the base on Hoth, at least not when they did. The Emperor would have likely trained a new apprentice, so perhaps you see Mara Jade show up and lead the search for young Skywalker.
- Or instead of that, imagine Luke accepting Vader's Offer at the battle on Bespin. Luke turns evil, and joins Vader in an attempt to overthrow teh Emperor. They succeed, but in the battle Vader is mortally wounded. Luke takes over the Empire, Leia trains with Yoda, clones of Sam Witwer show up to help with an epic battle - ok now I'm having delusions of gandeur, but plenty of cool stuff could happen.
- Or suppose the Death Star just decided "Hey, no need to fly AROUND the planet Yavin to hit the moon, lets just destroy the PLANET instead - all the debris from the explosion will easily destroy the moon". Now the rebellion consists only of those people who were in the air at the time. The Death Star goes into hyperdrive and the pilots are left with no command, no base, a whole lotta nothing. The cool part is we get to keep people like Biggs and Porkins around for more films this way.
I just really like the idea of a "What-If?" reimagination of Star Wars, because this way it wouldn't "Take away" anything from the original film, since it's clearly an alternate timeline - yet coudl give rise to a new line of action figures and stuff - imagine Emperor Luke, or Jedi Master Leia in a film?
