The Return of Carnor: Am I Crazy?

By PenguinBonaparte, in X-Wing Squad Lists

In a bit over a week my store will have its championship and I'm excited to bring back my favorite pilot, Carnor. I'm getting in some fun casual games with my new list but am really curious how people who've been bringing squints back have found things and if the meta will eat this alive. I know there'll be at least one double turret list, a Chewie/Leebo abomination, probably more. So here's my very simple list:

Soontir + PtL + Autothrusters = 32

Carnor + Ptl + Autothrusters = 31

Echo + VI + ACD + FCS = 37

It's a blast to fly and I'm practicing my echo-location, but my friends are all goofing around with scum right now, so it's hard to know if it'll hold up or not. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

*Can't read for ****, apparently*

if its not Han and Gunner/Luke, you MIGHT be okay with just auto thrusters, but chances are likely you will still snuff earlier than you expect. Roll the dice, see for yourself. On the other hand, auto + stealth is nigh unkillable by turrets. Which may gain you huge amounts of mileage in other matchups too. It just makes Soontir and Carnor flying your real damage dealer. The Phantom can go down to a Sigma and become a glorified gnat.

Also, I'm not sure what lists are truly afraid of Carnor... Swarms?

Decimators TL. Phantoms are gonna whizz around you. Turrets are going to kill the Phantom, then depending on if you take Stealth either lose to auto + stealth, or win vs your auto only.

Also, I'm not sure what lists are truly afraid of Carnor...

Blaster Turrets seem like they might be popular in Scum lists and Carnor just shuts them down.

Token stacking Falcons and non-Super Dash Donuts fear The Jax as well.

He's been on the rise here as well.

Scum has quite a few focus-token passers and stealers (Calculation, Bodyguard, Palob, Kaato) as well as (as noted) the Agromech tempting people with Blaster Turrets, so Carnor may do well.

If you swap Carnor's PTL for Lone Wolf and drop FCS from Echo, you can add a hull upgrade to Soontir to keep him from popping too soon against a vader-decimator or a stealth device to help against regular attacks. Carnor can bash his way into the action while Soontir and Echo hit from the sides, letting Carnor get his lone wolf re-rolls in addition to AT's defensive boost

I've tried Lone Wolf on Carnor five times now and I've yet to see it outperform PTL. It does look sweet "on paper"

The mobility options from PTL however are crucial in order to reliably end in R1, when you need it.

Yeah, I don't trust lone-wolf all that much. I guess to get the hull or stealth device on Soontir I could drop Carnor to Turr with VI. I like Carnor a lot though just because it's so much fun when he shuts things down. I'm not really worried about scum, except maybe Mr. Mux, just big turrets. If it's a game where maneuvering matters, not just holding-pattern until victory, I'll have a chance. If I went for dropping to a Sigma phantom, wouldn't that just be the first target and die instantly? I think I've only played a non-named Phantom once.

Carnor is kind of like Palob, only riskier (range 1) but with potentially greater payoff (interceptor, no target limit)

He certainly makes it easier for anyone to find their mark and makes it harder enemies to dodge attacks. At the very least, it'll allow you to skew the dice game with even the humble academy Tie suddenly having a chance at hitting 3+ agility and actually dodging pretty will with their own :P
