Bringers of Law VS Kingswood Trail

By fabest, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi,

If my opponent use Kingswood Trail on my Bringers of Law, can I untap my character or not?

In my opinion it's no because Bringers of Law untap when an opponent declares a challenge against you and Kingswood Trail kneels when he declares attackers.

And I think you declare a challenge then you declare attackers. I may be wrong, if it happens at the same time I guess the active player (so the attacker) choose the order of resolution (that won't change a lot of things I guess).

~ "Untap"? >>shudder<<

Seriously, though:

Bringers of Law - Response: After an opponent initiates a challenge against you, stand Bringers of Law.

Kingswood Trail - Response: After you declare attackers during a (POW) challenge, put Kingswood Trail into Shadows to choose and kneel a character with a (POW) icon controlled by the defending player.

Now, when a player "initiates" a challenge, they have to do two things; first, announce the challenge type and defending player then second, declare (and kneel) attackers. So "declare attackers" is a part of "initiates a challenge against you." And even if you want to get technical about the two different framework events, the Response opportunity for the two comes at the same time (Step 5 of the Framework Action Window for declaring an attack).

What this means is that the two Responses opportunities are simultaneous. So the ultimate result depends on turn order and whether or not the players choose to use the Responses.

In a framework action window, the First Player ( not the active/attacking player) gets the first chance to trigger a Response. Then, players take turns (proceeding clockwise) until everyone is done. There are a few possibilities:

First player is Defender:

1. First Player (defender) stands Bringers of Law.

2. Second Player (attacker) uses Kingswood Trail to kneel Bringers of Law (by the "one Response per trigger" rule, the First Player cannot stand the Bringers a second time)

- or -

1. First Player (defender) passes on the chance to use a Response

2. Second Player (attacker) uses Kingswood Trail on a different character

3. First Player (defender) stands Bringers of Law

- or -

1. First Player (defender) passes on the chance to use a Response

2. Second Player (attacker) also passes on the chance to use a Response

3. Players have all passed, Response opportunities over, go on to Step 6.

First Player is attacker:

1. First Player (attacker) uses Kingswood Trail to kneel a different character

2. Second Player (defender) stands Bringer of Law

- or -

1. First Player (attacker) passes on the chance to use a Response

2. Second Player (defender) stands Bringers of Law

3. First Player (attacker) used Kingswood Trail to kneel Bringers of Law

- or -

1. First Player (attacker) passes on the chance to use a Response

2. Second Player (defender) passes on the chance to use a Response

3. Players have all passed, Response opportunities over, go on to Step 6.

So it's just a game of who triggers what, when, and possibly having someone miss out on the opportunity to stand/kneel anything because no one wants to be the first to trigger anything.

Ok, thank you Ktom. It was not evident.

"Untap" was a provocation of course :)
