Dark Fate Clarification

By chemical22, in Talisman Rules Questions

When using dark fate, is the rule interpreted as:

- Only one dark fate may be spent to force a player to reroll a single die.

Or

- Each player may spend one dark fate to force player to reroll a single die.

So in essence, I am asking, could two separate players force another player to make two rerolls of the same die?

In the same breath, could you dark fate a roll that has already been rerolled by the player using light fate?

Additionally, if a player rolls 2 dice for something: Could that player light fate one die, and another player dark fate the other? Or alternatively could 2 players each spend a dark fate to force a reroll of both dice?

When a fate (whether light or dark) is used to re-roll a die, no more fate (whether light or dark) can be used to re-roll any of those dice.

First someone rolls his dice.

Then he chooses to use light fate on one of the dice.

If he does not use light fate, one of his opponents may use dark fate on one of the dice.

Although light fate has priority over dark fate, there may be up to 5 people (i.e. everyone else) who wish to use dark fate. There is no priority order over the spenders of dark fate, similar to how there is no priority order for spellcasting, so your group has to come up with something. We handle dark fate priority the same way we (and the Digital Edition) handle spellcasting: speed! The first person to chuck his dark fate onto the table gets to use it.

Hope that answers your questions!

Thanks for the clarification. I'm actually kind of disappointed with this answer as multiple fate throwing created a fun cut-throat game - I interpreted the rule as "A Player" may only use one fate on a roll, and not that "A Roll" may only have one fate point applied. I guess there are always house rules.

On a side note...

I've also been mulling around with the idea of house rule: Evil characters always get dark fate if unspecified and Good characters always get good fate if unspecified. Neutral characters may choose.

I realize that this give neutral characters a slight advantage, and perhaps some could argue that innately light fate is better than dark - but it still feels fun and an "in character" thing to try. Anyone ever try this?

any roll can only be re-rolled once, no matter the source of any fate.

I don't think the equations dark fate = evil and light fate = good reflect the nature of the 2 types of fate. They are not something related to alignment, but a way to influence destiny. In the same fashion as Light and Dark Destiny cards, "light" is about self-improvement and personal achievements, while "dark" encourages manipulation of others. Being evil should not prevent you from being selfish and to care for your own good, and being good doesn't imply you won't ever try to influence others if it suits your cause.

Even though your house rule might work in game terms, I don't think it's thematically fit for Talisman light and dark fate. It's just my opinion, of course. :)
