First-glance lists - advice wanted

By anfauglir, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi all. I am loving the look of this... I resisted X-Wing (just...), but there is no way I can avoid buying into this! I have decided to gently buy into Wave I and then see how fleet options change before splashing out again when I know what I want (i.e. when more of the Empire is at my disposal...). As the last game I played like this was Space Fleet (anyone?!) I thought I'd post and see what people think about my proposed lists. They are supposed to end up being flexible and competitive. In particular, I'd like to know what people think the objective choices should be.

I am less fussed about upgrades (as there will be some that we are unaware of, and they are easily changed) but the basic structure is what I want to play until I get a feel for the game and develop some tactics and play-style. I am also finding it hard to judge the impact of cards like Tarkin and Garm Bel Iblis, though they seem pretty huge to me. From my reading of what we know, I think that squadrons will be the kingmakers and I have maxed out on these - do people agree with that?

1x Soontir Fel 18 1x Luke 20

1x TIE Interceptor 11 1x Wedge 19

1x Howlrunner 16 3x X-Wings 3x13

1x Mauler Mithel 15 2x A-Wings 2x11

5x TIE/LN 5x8 100pts

100pts

1x Victory II-Class 85 1x CR90a 44

Grand Moff Tarkin 35 Garm Bel Iblis 25

Leading Shots 4 Engine Techs 8

XX-9 Turbolasers 5

1x Nebulon-B Escort 57

1x Gladiator II-Class 62 Yavaris 5

Engine Techs 8

1x Nebulon-B Support 51

Total pts Enhanced Armament 10

299

Total pts

300

Any obvious problems that people can see?

Thanks in advance!

Anf

I like the rebel list more than the Imperial. I'm not sure I'd take so many named fighter squadrons. Maybe trade out a couple so you could have 9 TIE/LN. Just my 2 cents. Haven't even played one game so maybe I'm way off... lol... I just have a feeling a large TIE swarm will be more effective.

Based on the fighter article you can only spend 1/3 of your points on fighters, and 100pts on fighters is more than 1/3 of a 299pt list. Hopefully they actually meant that there is a 100pt limit, rather than a strict 1/3 limit.

I'd say on the first list spend less on Fighters and add a second Gladiator. If all your fighters are superiority fighters then they are wasted points after the enemy bombers are destroyed. They have a hard time being effective against ships, which are the main targets.

The Rebel fighters actually look good, Luke and X-Wings are ok against ships, and A-wings are better than other non-bombers against ships (that Black Dice really helps).

Idk if an Enhanced Armament is all that useful on a Neb, you never want to show the enemy your sides, 1 Shield is incredibly weak.

@moffmalthus - I was torn on that too, but I am making massive assumptions about how effective the defence tokens will be for cards like Howl and Mithel. If they suck then a cloud of TIEs it is!

@Konradkurze - Good shout on the points. I just assumed it meant 1/3 of the 300pt max, which is stupid of me. I maxed out on TIEs just assuming that all Rebel (Scum) lists will max on X-Wings, so you may be right about dead points. On reflection, you are definitely right about the guns on the Neb-B - thanks for that.

I'm hoping the fighter thing is a flat 100pts, because that is far and away the easiest, but you never what they'll actually do.

It has to be, doesn't it? Unless FFG's real agenda is just to laugh in the face of simplicity and common sense... The game has a beautiful simplicity about its mechanics so far, so fingers crossed.

Just want to say that the main reason everyone is talking about fighters right now is not nessecerily because they think that fighters are going to be all end all but rather because they were the last article realeased (save the objectives) so they are fresh on everyone's minds. What I'm getting at is that I really don't think maxing out fighters will be that great of a tactic, I feel it it will be in consistent

Want to point out that the black dice on the a-wing isn't that great since the a-wing does not have bomber so it can't cause crits

While true a single Black Dice causes 0.75 damage per roll on average to ships, a single Blue Dice causes 0.50 damage per roll on average. So it is a sizable advantage, actually just a little worse than having a Red Dice and Bomber (X-Wings), and considering A-Wings are 2 points cheaper than X-Wings, plus have Counter, they are actually a fairly well rounded squad.

Yes your right I didn't realize that the only Crist were the double damage sides so I thought it had like 50% hits
