Gamorrean guards ?

By Mad Malade, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Since it should be long before new types of troops are released, I daydreamed about new ones.

With only three different mercenary cards, I though it would be fun adding a new bad boy, so here I came with Gamorrean Guards.

I wanted to make them though but slow. I gave them assault because I could not find another fitting ability. I though this may not be as powerful as with other units since they are limited to melee attack. Overall, what do you think ?

Maybe reach? You could also consider protector (Gamorrean GUARDS). I keep thinking of the Gamorreans in Battlefront II: slow, unmaneuverable, but absolutely devastating when they get close. Maybe lose the Assault ability and add another die to the pool? I was thinking a Yellow, or maybe a green if we want to get wild. It would have to adjust the cost upward, of course, but I feel that would capture the feel of the guards much better.

Yeah, they're slow, so Assault doesn't really do it, because it gives the image of them attacking quickly enough to attack twice in the time that others attack once.

Add Protector and a double-action ability that allows them to become Focused while attacking. That makes them scary up close, but not as deadly if they have to chase you down.

You have good points gentlemens. Assault is not as suited as would be protector. In that case I think the +1 defense would be too much, because two side by side would have +2. I would only keep it for the elite version.

I prefer not to give them reach, because part of the concept is to make it hard for them to reach their intended target. I really like the idea of a double action to make a focused attack. Maybe even a single action that gives focus, which would be slightly better.

All in all I would not want to make them too powerful (they're still "just Gamorreans", right?). The idea is to make a cool squad, balanced, and keeping their cost low.

Why not make one up!

  • Shocking Blow: After their attack is resolved, If the Gamorrean guard caused 4 or more Damage, the figure is also stunned. (Think guards need to contain their prisoners...therefore stunned!)
  • Not on the List: If 2 or more Gamorrean Guards are adjacent to each other they become impassible to enemy figures. (Gamorrean Bouncers!)
  • (C/O thatjakeguy) Wild Beast: If a Gamorrean Guard is defeated and the attacker is within 2 spaces, You become focused, and immediately interrupt that turn. Move adjacent to the figure that defeated the guard and perform one attack. If you do NOT roll a surge the attack misses. (This might be a bit OP thats why the necessary surge)

This is kinda fun...FF you need an Idea guy!?

I like thereisnotry's idea of a double action to focus and attack, and slaptac's shocking blow and not on the list. As much as possible, I'm in favor of there being something "special" about every figure. Gamorrean Guards that are serious roadblocks is a cool idea.

Actually, I wanted to use one ability already in the game mainly to make the graphics more easy. I did not want to look for the right font. Call me lazy... and you might be right ! :P

Another reason is that I wanted to keep things simple, but I really like the movement restraining idea. What would you think of something like :

Bouncer : Hostile figures entering the space you occupy must spend an additional movement point.

This is fun indeed. If I find an appropriate font I think I'll start doing others prototypes.

There ya go U/Mad Malade !

How bout this!?

I like the idea of passing through for one extra movement point! It doesn't seem to OP so I would consider that for a passive trait.

  • B ouncer : If two Gamorrean guards are adjacent and an enemy figure enters an adjacent space immediately Interrupt and roll two red dice. If 6 (Damage) is rolled OR 1 surge, you may move that figure back two spaces and they suffer 2 (Strain). (The figure does not take the damage rolled)

When I think of bouncers, I think of someone who is going to ruin your day if you get too close. I thought it would be kinda cool if an enemy figure got too close The Gamorrean's could "Ruin Their Turn". The dice will have to be on their side to get 6 damage or a surge since there is only one on the Red Die, BUT...it could happen!

Just thought of this...hope it makes sense.

  • Gang Up: When an attack is resolved on a Gamorrean guard another guard may immediately roll 1 Green die and The enemy figure suffers the results. The attacking guard must be adjacent to the enemy figure.

These are some interesting ideas. That being said I think the bouncer trait is a little heavy of use don't you think ? Maybe tune it to a (fist) attribute test ?

Anyway, I've worked on the cards this weekend and I cam up with this :

(Hope you like it)

Those abilities are great. :D

I feel like the health is a little low though. They're weaker than Jynn and she's a puny human!

I really like both abilities, but I feel like one of them should be left off the regular version, since most figures that have 2 versions gain an ability for the elite version. I guess it does gain cleave as an elite, but I feel like blocker could be the upgrade.

I think the health is OK, but only because of the passive +1 block. At speed 3 and with no mobility, the regular version might be near unplayable, though.
