do I roll packs of minion groups in one lump sum roll and not individually for each guy in the group? So of I had 3 groups of 3 minions I'd be rolling just 3 times or 9? I'm still learning the game thanks for the help.

Yes, one lump sum; so only 3 rolls in your example. Minion group potency are because group skill is increased by higher numbers, not by numerous rolls.
