Drea Renthal,R4-B11 and timing of spending a target lock.

By Ion Dave, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I got my first game with Scum in yesterday using Drea Renthal with R4-B11, Ion Cannon Turret and the BTL-A4 title. The issue of the timing of Drea Renthal pilot ability "After you spend a target lock, you may receive 1 stress token to acquire a target lock." and how it interacts with step 3 attack modification. To quote from the rulebook on spending target lock tokens-

"Spending target lock token

If the attacker has a target lock on the defender, he

may return his pair of assigned target lock tokens

to the action token supply to choose any number of

attack dice and reroll them once"

In the game I played Drea's ability as taking place before the actual re-roll, but now I am not certain that was technically correct. So the question becomes does spending a target lock include re-rolling the dice, or is just the removing of tokens which allows the re-roll to take place or in the more specific example can Drea wait to see where the dice fall before opting whether to use her pilot ability?

Likewise with R4-B11 "When attacking, if you have a target lock on the defender, you may spend the target lock to choose any or all defence dice. The defender must reroll the chosen dice." what is the correct timing for using her ability in the context of this card's ability?

Any help or insight you guys could provide would be much appreciated, I've already taken some flak from other players for using this combo so want to make sure I'm doing everything right by the rulebook rather than using my own ignorance to hoard unfair advantage.

I did see that one, It just seemed to descend into "nobody's really sure, let's wait for the faq" which wasn't really what I was looking for. So I wrote a bit more of a technically exact op and am hoping to see if there's anyone about with some different ideas on the matter. If it really is a matter of waiting to FAQ then I'm sure having multiple threads in the rules questions forum can't hurt and may even give FFG a polite nudge to focus on the issue.
