Uh-Oh... nobody is buying StarVipers!

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

What I want to know is why it came with 7 ion tokens. I mean, I'm glad that FFGS is filling up the extra space on the cardboard sheets with something, but why ion tokens of all things? The Starviper doesn't even have any possible way of ionizing enemy ships, or ionizing itself. IIRC it only comes with 1 stress and 2 focus tokens- I could see the value in a few extras of those, but ion tokens? I bought two of these, so now I have 14 extra ion tokens- what am I going to do with all these? I don't think it's even possible to have 14 ion tokens in play at one time, unless we're talking about some sort of ridiculous Z-95 swarm vs Z-95 swarm where every ship fired its ion pulse missiles in the same round.

Again, not complaining, I just found it odd. I would have been much happier if they had used that space to include a new asteroid or debris cloud token- at least that would get some use.

It comes with a Ion torpedo, which spread the ion to all nearby ship.

I bought two because I buy at least two of everything. I've flown Guri and Xizor both. I think this ship is cursed for me...I've rolled a lot of blanks with it. I still like the ship a lot though and am going to keep flying it.

ah, the curse of the expensive 3-agility ships

yeah, when you're relying on green dice to protect your 30+ point investment, they're going to bugger you good :P

strangely, only my Defenders have proven to be consistently reliable, but that's probably because of ion cannons + white 4k abuse. Not getting shot at is FAR better than 3 agility!

Well, Xizor also has been thus far immortal, because no one shoots him

Isn't it true that most 3-green-dice ships also come with ways to avoid rolling greens at all? Barrel rolls, boosts (which also gives you access to a guaranteed evade), evade action, etc (or that might be it). So whilst it's true that green dice are a poor defence, if you don't roll them very often you're pretty survivey.

Exactly. Defenders are just better enablers of said strategy because they pack on the awesome ion cannon and get to 4k while still getting an action to continue punching through an enemy's agility.

If you're just PS 1 and relying on barrel-roll arc dodging solely for defense, though, things are most likely going to go poorly :(

B-rolls/boosts are great repositioning tools and an even better blocking tools, but it's more astronomically difficult to strictly arc dodge when you're moving first. Plus, if you **** up, you're looking at naked green dice *shudder*

Yurp. That's why such ships are just for the super coolest players :P

Why does no one like the way it looks? I think it is the best looking ship in the game right now.

I love its look, it has a personnal allure on the battlefield that I think represent perfectly the pride of the Black Sun organisation.

Kinda like the Defender, you either love or hate its look, but you can't be indifferent to it.

or the complete megalomania of the ******* that commissioned the design :P

I love the Starviper's look. It perfectly captures the sheer arrogant majesty of its princely pilot and really stresses some opponents out when they want to shoot at this impressive-looking centerpiece but know that they'd be better off shooting at crummy Z-95s

I just don't get a combat ship that tries to present the largest profile possible to an attacker. Why are you flaring your panels out? Are you trying to catch wayward shots? Why not pull those panels in along the sides, or turn them at a 90-degree angle to a head-on attacker (or one on your 6), the way X-Wings and Tie Fighters do? This in itself should reduce that agility to 2. The design makes the sort of combat sense that I would expect from a middling sci-fi novel.

for the same reason we hear sounds in space and Tie Fighters get those massively cumbersome, peripheral vision blocking panels

it's ******* cool!

Xizor, Predator

Enforcer

Mandalorian w/ Bodyguard and Recon Spec

Bam.

I think Guri is the only good pilot for it.

I actually cover this in a fanfic I wrote with the idea of a helmet-mounted display which enables you to see the outlines of other ships projected inside your helmet, so you can still see them when they're behind the panels (which are not visible anyway, because the cockpit only has a front windscreen, a rear porthole (useless) and a grated top hatch). If a new X-wing game ever comes out for PC, I hope that's how they'll do it, otherwise using TrackIR or Oculus Rift in a TIE fighter is going be a real pain.

I think Guri is the only good pilot for it.

Yeah... becuase they made the badass Vigos stupid little skill 3 poops, no EPT or Illicit-goodies or anything!!!

Boo FFG BOOooo-UOOooo-Phooey!

:angry::P:wacko:

thats not true !! ive bought 3 star vipers and man this ship is awesome !!! so far ive bought of all the scum expansions 3 but my m3 interceptors will grow to 5 in total i guess...

I am picking my copy up tonight after work. I have a list built around it already that I want to playtest before our local tourney in April.

It comes with a Ion torpedo, which spread the ion to all nearby ship.

Now I'm curious though- I wonder what the maximum number of ion tokens you could see in Play at the same time during a regular 100-point game?

Oh right, forgot about the ion torpedoes. That makes sense.

depends on how many Tie fighters you can jam into range 1 of another tie fighter before you get a tie bomber to fire a torp at it. Given that range 1 is roughly 2 ship bases in length, I'd estimate 25 ion tokens per torp (Though it's probably more because I believe Range 1 is slightly longer) if the maximum wasn't 16 ships (two 8 tie swarms) which doesn't leave enough room for the bomber so 15.

realistically, though, I'd be amazed if you got 3+

But that's just one torp. What about a bunch of bombers equipped with proton torps all firing at each other? Or a mix of bombers with torps and Z-95s with ion pulse missiles?
