Went to my second X-wing tournament (1st Store Championship) on Saturday (2/28 at Game Night Games in Salt Lake City, UT), and managed to do quite well for myself. Here was my list:
The Donut Hole
Dash Rendar, Veteran Instincts, Autoblaster, Outrider Title, Navigator (50 pts)
Airen Cracken, Veteran Instincts, Cluster Missiles, Munitions Failsafe (25 pts)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12 pts)
Bandit Squadron Pilot (12 pts)
99 points total
I've played this list a number of times before the tournament and found it to be reasonably successful and well-rounded against a number of different lists. Even after the tournament I have about a 70% win rate with it. It's biggest weakness are other turreted ships, especially if they have a higher PS (hence the VI on both Dash and Cracken). In this list, Dash can ONLY attack at range 1, but with autoblaster his regular hits cannot be blocked in any way. He makes up for the short range with Navigator and Barrel roll. At PS9, there are very few ships that can get away from AutoDash when he wants to be next to you. Originally I had this list with 4 bandits, knowing that I would need the mini-swarm to take care of other Turrets, but I found that Dash was always hurting for actions, so I swapped two bandits out for Cracken. VI is to ensure that Cracken shoots before Dash and can pass him an action when needed. Cluster Missiles is awesome on Cracken, btw, as it allows him to pass two actions that turn. Add Munitions Failsafe and it becomes even better. Attacking a Decimator? Great, 2 3-dice attacks ought to result in several damage. Attacking Soontir with AT and SD? Pass 2 actions to your wingmen and then repeat the next round.
I like the list because Autoblaster does well against all the things that are popular in the Meta right now. C-3P0? Millenium Falcon Title? Autothrusters? Cloaked Phantoms? None of them do a dang thing to stop Autoblaster.
The Tournament
Going into the tournament I knew I was likely to see a lot of fat turrets, and I was right. I didn't have a single match against an opponent who wasn't fielding at least 1 turret. I debated not bringing this list, and perhaps doing a Soontir +miniswarm list, but I have practiced with the Donut Hole and not with swarms, so I went with what I was comfortable with, and didn't end up regretting it. The Autoblaster caught a lot of people off guard, and many people struggled to figure out how to handle it. I found that I had to clarify the rules on autoblaster almost every single match because nobody was familiar with it, especially with after the updated FAQ a few months ago that made it so that evade tokens and etc count as dice results, and thus can't be used against autoblaster.
We had 24+ people show up for the tournament, so the rules stipulated 5 rounds of Swiss, then a cut to top 8. Because of that we only had 60 minute rounds, which a lot of people (aka everyone without Fat Han or Fat Chewie) weren't thrilled about, but oh well. As it was I only had 1 game go to time.
Here are my match-ups, as best as I can remember:
Round 1, vs Jeff:
Chiraneau, VI, gunner, ysanne, etc.
Whisper, VI, gunner, ACD, etc.
I won initiative and gave it to my opponent. I wanted him moving first so that I could react to his placement. Plus, AutoDash doesn't care how many defense dice or focus tokens whisper has.My opponent knew he needed to avoid Dash with Whisper, but I think he underestimated how much distance Dash can cover. Dash took out whisper quickly, and then it was a slugging match between Chiraneau and my list. Chiraneau went down with about 5 minutes left on the clock. I won 100 - 49 (I think- I don't remember exactly which ships of mine he destroyed)
1-0
Round 2, vs Paul:
Chiraneau, VI, gunner, ysanne, Engine Upgrade, etc.
Soontir, PtL, AT, Hull Upgrade
My opponent's list was very similar to my first opponent's list, but the game played out very differently. He kept Soontir well and far away from Dash, so I never got a shot on him. Instead I went after Chiraneau. Cracken died fairly early, without ever landing a hit with his clusters, and Dash and the bandits did their best without him. I just barely managed to kill Chiraneau in the very last round of the match before the game went to time. 65-25. I ended up being Paul's only loss that day, and when we cut to the top 8 he was in 2nd place. He then dropped out because he had already won two other store tournaments and had all the prizes up for grabs already. He said he dropped so that someone else could have a go at the prizes. Very cool guy.
2-0
Round 3, Bryce:
Chewbacca, C-3P0, MF, etc.
Leebo, Determination, Outrider, HLC
Bryce was another cool guy- I remembered playing against him in my first Tournament (Assault on Imdaar Alpha last summer). I made the mistake of going after Leebo first- I don't remember why I thought that would be a good idea, other than maybe that I figured I wanted to use Dash to his full potential before he died, and I knew that Dash would have no trouble against Leebo. I was right, I took out Leebo no sweat, but in the process he picked off all of my Z-95s, leaving Dash and Chewbacca both relatively untouched to face off. Not Good. With a half an hour still on the clock, I knew that was a match-up I was going to lose. I considered running away the whole game and forcing a draw (we had both destroyed 49 points), but that's lame. So I went for it, hoping that in some fluke of the dice I would somehow pull through. However, on the second turn of our slugging match he landed his chewie parked pretty close to the edge of the map. He had room to turn, but there was a chance I could block him and bump him off the map, so I went for it. It was CLOSE. Dang close. We had to call the TO over and have him check the official rules (twice) on how to line up bumped ships, and in the end we had the TO perform the maneuver while we shielded his view of the edge of the map so that there wouldn't be any bias. After the move, Chewie was off the map by literally 1/32" of an inch. Whew! Bryce was really good-natured about it too, but I know I'm going to have to watch my back next tournament we're both in.
100-49
3-0
Round 4, Josh:
Super Dash (Dash, PtL, Kyle, Engine Upgrade, Outrider, HLC)
Corran Horn, FCS, etc.
I started out hot and took out Corran in the first real round of combat- not with AutoDash, but with some hot rolls from Cracken's Cluster Missiles along with another shot from one of the bandits, followed by a bunch of blank green dice on his part. The rest of the game turned into AutoDash chasing his SuperDash around the map while he picked off my Z-95s. I had a higher PS than him, but he flew well and managed to put some distance between us, so that I had to break away with AutoDash and wait to reengage. By the time I did chase him to a corner to reengage I had to survive one shot from his HLC before I could get close enough to finish him off. He rolled hot, I did not, and my AutoDash died. My last Z-95 followed 2 turns later, and I received my first loss of the day. 42-100.
3-1
Round 5, Robert:
(He actually posted his tournament results already, here.)
Fat Chewie, PtL, Kyle Katarn, C-3P0, Engine Upgrade
Ten Numb, Proton Torpedos, Ion Cannon, Mercenary Copilot
After my round 3 match I knew that I didn't want to leave Chewie around for the end game, so I threw everything I had at him, blocking him with my Bandits and firing everything I could at him. It only took 3 or 4 rounds and then at last I had the mighty Chewbacca. Ten numb took out a Bandit with his Proton Torpedo, but that was about it. 100-12.
With a tally of 4-1 it was enough to earn me a spot in the top 8. I was 4th ranked, but when Paul dropped out it bumped me up to 3rd.
Round 6 / 1st Elimination round:
I honestly can't remember my opponent's name. Sorry dude.
Fat Chewie, predator, R2D2, C-3P0, MF title, etc.
Leebo, Outrider, HLC
Once again I knew I didn't want Chewie around in the end game so I went for him first. He went after AutoDash and in just one or two rounds he took out Dash's shields and landed me with an Injured Pilot Crit (the crit that ignores pilot abilities and EPTs- not a good one for Dash to get stuck with). I broke away from Chewie with AutoDash to chase after Leebo and keep myself alive a few more rounds. Leebo couldn't get away from Dash, and spent most of the game unable to get a shot in. Meanwhile my Z-95s stayed on Chewie's tail until I had dropped him to about 4-5 hull (+1 shield from R2) before my second Bandit died. At that point Cracken couldn't hurt Chewie by himself, thanks to MF+3P0+R2, so my only hope was to break away to finish off Leebo and then team up on Chewie, but it was not to be. Leebo broke away from AutoDash in the asteroids (darn Injured Pilot card!) and Cracken died. Dash got Leebo down to 1 hull before Chewie took him out too. 0-100
Final tally, 4-2. and I think my final ranking was 6th place out of 24. Not too shabby for a list of my own design, revolving around a card which people generally consider to be crap and/or overpriced. I had several people compliment me on my list afterwards and confess they had no idea how to deal with it. And a few of my opponents that I beat had won store championships and other tournaments before, some of them with the same list they brought against me.
Best of all, I had a lot of fun. ![]()
