Help Me Cheat

By knightpadawan22, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I was wondering what upgrade cards and pilot abilities can make the YT-1300 with HLC and outrider get crits. Thanks for the help and only played eight games,so still new to the game.

I assume you meant YT-2400.

So, here are a few:

  1. Rerolls. When you reroll dice from an HLC attack, you keep any new rolled critical hits.
  2. Marksmanship. You can change one eye result into a critical hit result.
  3. Calculation. You can spend a Focus Token to change one eye result into a critical result.
  4. Mercenary Copilot. If you attack at range 3, you can change one hit result into a critical result.
  5. Jan Dodonna: If you are at range 1 of him, you may change one hit result into a critical result.
  6. Etahn A'baht: If your target is in his arc of fire, you can change one hit result into a critical result.

Inflammatory topic aside, and assuming you mean the YT-2400, lets start by going over how the HLC actually works. It only turns any (crit) results in the initial dice roll into (hit) results. An attack with it goes like this:

1) Declare Target and that you're using the HLC

2) Roll the attack dice

3) Before anything else, the HLC's additional text triggers; any (crit) results on the initial roll are changed to (hit) results.

4) Defender modifies attack dice(Sensor Jammer, Elusiveness, etc.)

5) Attacker Modifies attack dice

6) and then defense dice, and damage resolution

At step 5, any modification that could result in a (crit) would stick. Off the top of my head the only things that could do this in a YT-2400 would be Marksmanship(a single (eye) results at Step 4 would be turned to a (crit)) and re-rolls from Predator, Lone Wolf, spending a target lock, etc. though there may be some other upgrade available I'm forgetting.

So yeah, no cheating involved. Reference the FAQ Clarifications on the HLC for the rulings that this is how it works.

You certainly are cheating if you are putting a HLC and Outrider on a YT-1300 ;) I guess we could assume you mean the YT-2400 instead. :)

To rephrase the question what you are asking is probably: How do I get [crit] results when using the HLC?

Jehan has pretty much answered those. Under the "re-roll" heading you'd include things like spending a TL or using Predator or maybe Lone Wolf.

Honestly, if it's just crits you're after, you're probably better off using the Mangler Cannon. Use that with Calculation and Mercenary Co-Pilot and you're possibly looking at three crits per attack. And you don't have to worry about the hole at Range 1 if you're using the Outrider title.

I had run the Outrider with the HLC and Recon Specialist for awhile, so that I'd have a focus to spend on offense and defense. Then I played an entire game where every time I rolled for the HLC, I got 2 hits and 2 blanks. I switched out Recon Specialist for Weapons Engineer, and things went much better.

Marksmanship note: If you take the Marksmanship action, it applies for the round. So if you have a gunner on board, it would also apply to the second attack that the gunner would provide if the first one missed. Can be very handy sometimes.

A follow up note to that.

Gunner is completely useless with the Outrider while it is equipped with a cannon. This is because Outrider shuts down the YT-2400's primary attack and Gunner can only make an attack with the primary weapon. To put it another way having a YT-2400 w/ Outrider + HLC + Marksmanship to possibly get some crit results gains no benefit from equipping a Gunner.

Well, he did ask to cheat....

Thanks everyone, and yes I meant YT-2400.

Generally avoid mentioning cheating, especially if you're not actually cheating :P

I originally came to this thread to mock you for being a cheater. (With only a few exceptions) Everyone here is a decent, respectable player. Don't be that guy who isn't
