IG88-B Ability

By Deltmi, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Just need some clarification on his ability. If I have him equipped with 2 cannons (Mangler, Flechette), can both be used when attacking the defender? For example, I use a primary attack and miss, then I can trigger his ability to use the Mangler cannon. If I miss with the Mangler cannon can I then use the Flechette cannon?

So basically, you can have up to 3 attacks by equipping 2 cannons?

Read the ability carefully and it'll all be clear!

"IG-88B: Once per round, after you perform an attack that does not hit, you may perform an attack with an equipped secondary weapon."

:)

If it weren't for the "once per round" clause, you could equip any cannon and just keep firing that cannon until you hit the target.

IG-88 earned a reputation as a bounty hunter who always delivered, and this consistency is reflected in IG-88B’s unique pilot ability, which functions almost like a built-in Gunner. Once per round, if he performs an attack that does not hit, IG-88B can perform an attack with an equipped cannon upgrade. Notably, you can use the same cannon twice, so if you miss, for example, with an Ion Cannon, you can fire that Ion Cannon again, aiming for a better result.

Ugh, I just read it again and now got it through my thick skull... It was this that originally confused me because I assumed he attacked with primary, then used Ion Cannon. Instead, he used Ion Cannon twice!

Just to be absolutely clear...

There is no restriction on the initial attack: it can be made with the primary weapon, or a cannon.

However, if it misses, the second shot has to be with a cannon.

Correct! :)

If I roll a hit, and the defender is able to evade it, do I still get to do the second/cannon attack?

If I roll a hit, and the defender is able to evade it, do I still get to do the second/cannon attack?

No yes, being "hit" by an attack is defined as there being atleast one hit or crit result left uncanceled after the defender has canceled results with his dice/tokens.

I think this should be "yes" (which I think Smuggler knows, he may have just misread it).

If you roll one or more hit/critical hit results, and the defender cancels all of them, then you have not hit, and IG-88B will trigger his ability.

Last paragraph under "Compare Results" on page 12 covers it.

Yes, Buhallin got it right. I was a bit to quick while formulating my answer :o
