An extra ship...but which?

By Chris Taylor, in Star Wars: Armada

help wanted.

I am fortunate to have a march birthday and have all the announced expansions ordered and the core set.

My sister has forgotten to buy me something and wants to get me a ship. What ship should I go for as a second copy?

I am between a third star destroyer or a third corvette, or maybe a gladiator.

Not really done any list building...what would you guys and gals go for?

If you go for the VSD, you would be seriously pressed for points for upgrades and fighters.

I would think that the Gladiator would fill a nice gap and give some extra options in fleet building.

That is, if you are planning to play Empire. If not, I would think that maybe an extra assault frigate for the rebels would give more options on that side. :)

Try out the Gladiator, it makes for an ideal back-up for the VSD's weaker flank.

:)

3 VSDs to shock your opponent ^^

Galdiator

Thanks looks like either a gladiator or rebel assault ship then... Now to flip a coin.

Yeah, sounds like you may favor rebels so the MK-II would be a good choice. I would pick either that or the Gladiator as well, depending on which team you want to play more of.

I'll pile on with the support for having the second Gladiator... But in addition to the Gladiators I also set myself up to have 3 Nebulon-Bs just because I really want to play with the three named frigates together. So even if it is not super competitve, I'm all about having the necessary components to play whatever list that you are excited to play.

The Nebulon-B is iconic and it looks to have some interesting tactics for its use... But those wide open side arcs are concerning.

If I may add to this. I am getting Armada for wife and I, and I guess that eventually we will grab everything there is, but as of now, we will start with the Core pack. If tax-refunds allow, I will get a ship for both rebels and imperials.

Should I grab a fighter pack for either side, or a ship? If so which ones do you recommend?

We have no prior experience with X-Wing and I have trouble figuring out how much points each ship are worth. It would be great if we could have some balanced battles with whatever few ships we start out with.

You can only field up to 100 points of fighters in a 300 point game, so if you had extra fighter packs you would not be able to field them all, and I don't think you would be able to make a 300 point fleet with just those and the core set. So for that reason I'd say new ships.

I'd suggest playing with the core set to get a feel for the game before buying anything else. Then use a list builder like Fab's ( http://fabpsb.free.fr/armada_beta/index.php?lng=en ) to build some 300 point lists to help you decide what expansions to buy.

Oh thanks, I know that I can't field a 300 point game with the core and either fighters or an extra ship. But I am just looking for something balanced. But I realize it's a premature question since the game isn't out. Thanks for taking your time, and I will most certainly give that builder a look.

edit: it looks like you could field somewhere close to 300 with just a purchase of 2 extra packs.

Someone asked in my RPG thread where we got that stat from, and I couldn't find it in any of the articles but I know someone posted about it? Any idea?

Yeah and what would be the idea of the extra pack of fighters? According to the fleet generator linked, you could very well field more than 100 points of fighters.

From the Fighter Preview article:

" The tactical flexibility that squadrons offer is limited only by the fact that you can’t spend more than one-third of your fleet points on fighter squadrons."

LOL I read that article 3 times today looking for that and still missed it :P

It happens. i had to re-read it twice looking for that, and i knew it was in there!

Extropia beat me to it :P Yep it was in the fighter article.

40crew: The fleet builder doesn't yet have the squadron cap built into it. However, it does allow you to experiment with builds and see cards from expansions that you don't have - that's why I suggested it.

It's a great tool, and by just reading this thread I have learned a lot :) Thanks! I think I will try and get a Gladiator and a Assault Frigate. I assume that you with card, can make the points relatively balanced.
