Moving into and through Obstacles Changed WAY!!!!!

By Ravinoc, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The only time a ships base matters when 'traveling' along the template is when it can't complete it's move, then it's slid back along it. Imagine the falcon passing between two asteroids that are close together, it rotates on it's axis until it fits between them, a maneuver most pilots would perform(unless they're in a tie fighter, in which case they're pretty much screwed).

Funny thing is, in real life, the space between asteroids in an asteroid field is hundreds of miles.

The size of the ships base is really just a gaming abstraction.

On page 20 in the core rule it states

"When a ship executes a maneuver in which either the maneuver template or ship's base physically overlaps an obstacle token, follow these step:"

Then on page 18 in the FAQ

" Q. When a ship executes a maneuver, is the entire width of the ship considered to be moving along the maneuver template and possibly hitting obstacles?

A. NO. Only the maneuver template itself and the final position of the ship are considered when determining if a ship hit an obstacle."

OK so first off I have to say I hate this change. It gives large ships a big advantage. I mean so now big ship can move just like small ship as long as your maneuver template or final position of the ship are considered when determining if a ship hit an obstacle an not the ships base. This is just wrong. I mean a big ships base is 4 times the size of a small ships base. So it runs a bigger chance to hit something. But not now with this new ruling in the FAQ.it's like no don't worry it doesn't matter that almost half your ship goes over something your fine. You don't have roll. I am sorry why was this changed? What is wrong with the original ruling?

Now before someone posts an states "Well in 3D space the ship can be going over/under or around the obstacle so if the template doesn't go though it you should not have to roll to see if you get hit." To this I say yes that is true but you forgot one thing. in a 3D space the obstacle would be moving not sitting still an that is why you should roll if your base crossing over an obstacle. Cuz there is a chance it hits you. Did you see Empire Strikes Back?

So what are your opinions on this?

It's not a change. If you read the continuation of the rulebook,

If the template or the ship's base overlaps an obstacle follow these steps:

1)Execute the maneuver as normal, but skip the perform action step.

2)The player rolls one attack die. Suffer damage as per page 16

Important: When overlapping an obstacle token, the ship stays where it lands(on top of the token).

So if you read the whole section on Moving into and Through Obstacles, by following the steps laid out in the section, you perform the maneuver as normal, which as we know, is perform by placing the template then lifting the ship and placing it at the end of the template.

So what this means is either:

A)you place the template and it overlaps an obstacle. You then execute the maneuver as normal, but skip the action step. Then roll for damage

B)you place the template and it doesn't overlap. You execute the maneuver as normal, but your ship ends up overlapping the obstacle at the end of the template. You finish the maneuver as normal, by checking pilot stress and cleaning up the template, but skipping the perform action step. Then you cannot attack while on the obstacle.

And a final note, if you land on an obstacle, next turn, if your maneuver template overlaps the obstacle you're sitting on, your perform the maneuver as normal, skip your action step, and roll for damage.

One last thing that may help you understand my confusion. If you watch the Fantasy Flight complete tutorial it states the ship moves along the template an anytime they show a ship moving it does just that.

Yeah, ok. Just watched some of that and I can definitely see how their attempt to look all slick and professional could cause confusion on this point.

yes but its not just the look they say move along the template which make sense if you think about it. Cuz if your not then your teleporting an thats not flying thats just bamfing around

*shrug* FFG getting overly flashy with the graphics, I guess. It's definitely never, ever worked like that in-game.
