The only time a ships base matters when 'traveling' along the template is when it can't complete it's move, then it's slid back along it. Imagine the falcon passing between two asteroids that are close together, it rotates on it's axis until it fits between them, a maneuver most pilots would perform(unless they're in a tie fighter, in which case they're pretty much screwed).
Funny thing is, in real life, the space between asteroids in an asteroid field is hundreds of miles.
The size of the ships base is really just a gaming abstraction.
