Scum and Villainy Episode 12: Scumstraviganza

By Kelvan, in X-Wing

Kelvan, Theorist, and MrFroggies, are joined by Sozin to discuss in detail every new ship in Scum and Villainy. They discuss the best and worst of each expansion and hit upon combinations they like for each ship. Finally they discuss the expected Meta for the new wave and what X-wing jockeys should expect to see across the table.

What are your favorite Scum lists? Post them here and we’ll discuss some in the next podcast.

Nice work getting a faction named after you!

Nice work getting a faction named after you!

Hey man. The designers said it, maybe completely in jest, not me.

Listening now.

Wowzers my fine fellow Wingers... you ain't to keen on them Star Vipers... huh?

Good stuff!: pondering what you all had to say....

:)

Not so good stuff: Boba is on his way to your houses and he is going to show you all about getting in the middle of the ring with him... now.

Go on and use up your EPT on LW or get something else and have the new skill at range one... yeah that.

Epic much?

Personally I see Azzameen as the dud of the group. But I agree with Theorist. Boba's ability makes you want to do things with the Firespray that you normally don't namely getting too close to the enemy. It's not a bad ability especially late and for really nice kill shots.

But is it a cheap 35 point EPT or is it as good as Kath's Big Booty Cannnon? I don't think so.

Give me the source of that Boba image. That's awesome.

Yeah I had to giggle at your love for Kaths booty.

:D

Not every Firespray has to have a HLC.

I think the Mangler is better now. Imagine Boba with that and getting stacking rerolls and such.

Boba with three dice and at least one reroll and the extra dice for being in range one, and the Mangler does cause crits.

Oh Baby!

Now granted I am all about me some Epic and you get all up in each others faces in that game.

Image wise, I just saw it on Google, so right click dat and save it... like I did.

A good one I saw recently from Major Juggler was this:

That list could not be more up my alley.

Yup... Mux is nice!

:)

Boba changes the roll of the Firespray. You want to use it as a battering ram essentially to throw at the heart of your opponents list. He does as much chaos as possible before going down. He is hard to bring down especially since he is likely going to be bumping a ship or too. Boba doesn't care if he has any actions. He'll get his re-rolls and hurt things.

For the love of Boba, Bodyguard, and Palob:

Palob + VI + Blaster Turret + Rec. Spec. + Moldy + Dampeners = 31

Leeachos + Bodyguard + Hot Shot = 20

Boba + EU + Rec. Spec. + Deadman's Switch + Slave = 48

=100

Slow roll them all to build a healthy pile of focus on Palob. Once the action happens Boba goes to work at close range. He'll likely be tanking shots. Leeachos takes a focus off Palob, but then throws him an extra agility die. Turns the HWK into a very hard ship to kill. Alternatively you could throw the EU on Palob to give him a lot more mobility. Hopefully Boba dies and hurts a lot of your opponents ships.

and its she-zor not siz-zor ;)

That's certainly a way to combo two cards Jeff didn't like Jo jo.

Deadman' Boba makes his ability moderately more attractive. Like if you're going to lose him you just dive for the swarm. If you win or lose you still do something.

Great show. Depressing final message. "Get used to Whisper."

Yup... all Dat!

Good thing I play for fun huh.

listening to the show it got me thinking wow you guys are trapped by a stupid little TIE dat won't die... kinda sad I think.

Stay At Home, Play At Home, for the glory of FUN!

I'm in the middle of the Scyk portion right now, but have to jump on a work call and can't finish it. First off......it's pronounced SEEK. One of the YouTube interviews had the designers saying it that way.

Personally, I think the Scyk can be used very well as a Tie Fighter. Yes, it's 2 pts more than an Academy, but it's 1 PS higher, has a shield instead of a hull (great with all these crits these days), and gets a Target Lock. Yeah, you won't use it every turn, but you will use it! This thing can zip around or get in your flank and it's going to use that TL at times. Don't discount it!

Here's my first list for review. I call it Hide and Scyk:

Laetin w/ Hvy Scyk, Mangler, and Stealth Device

Kavil w/ Blaster Turret and R4 Agromech

Binayre w/ Ion Pulse Missile

2 x Cartel Spacers

Laetin hovers around the flanks and shoots. Kavil and the rest move into the fight. Cartel Spacers are there as Tie Fighters. They try to arc dodge and get in at Range 1 or bump. They distract your opponent or block your opponent while Kavil or Laetin do the damage. Ion missile is there to zap a high profile target (which is then swarmed). I've got a lot of experience with Tie Fighters and prefer them over a Z-95. I feel the Scyk is the same thing. I don't mind paying 2 more pts than an Academy.

I'm not to the point where you discuss the Starviper, but I'm see from another post that I'll not like your assessment. This is because the two ships that got me excited about S&V was the M3A and the Starviper.

Prince Xizor w/ Virago, Autothrusters, Adv. Sensors and either Predator or Outmaneuver

Syndicate Thug (Y-wing) w/ Ion Turret and Unhinged Astromech

3 x Z-95's

Move up together, but then scramble. Send each ship a different way and you won't know where Xizor is going to go. Let Xizor do the damage as everyone pings at the small ships. Or splash the damage to the swarm and let everyone fire. Hopefully get something Ionized so that the Z-95's can swarm it.

Cool picture, but in reality Boba Fett can't even take out a blind man....

I discuss that list a little on the next NOVA podcast that should be airing tomorrow. I'm calling it "Mux's mooks".

So far I am 6-0 on vassal with it, but I don't know how well it will do in a timed environment.

Edit: I thought about putting tactician on Mux, but instead went in favor of bumping the two Z-95's to PS3. Getting in-arc shots with Mux is not reliable, but shooting and moving all together at PS3 is. Either squad can work, but the initial setup and formation flying tactics are different.

Love the show keep up the good work guys!

A list I ran at my store championship that I would love to hear you guys talk about was

2 x Syndicate Thugs with BTL-A4, Ion Cannon Turret, and Unhinged Astromech

2 x Hired Guns with BTL-A4, Blaster Turret, and R4 Aggromech

I was surprised with how well it handled against evasive targets like Soontir and Phantoms, I only every really needed to get into range with one or two Ywings to seriously hurt them.

Doesn't that put your offense on your front line? That's always a no no for me.

When I'm building scyk lists the choice I really struggle with is Mangler + stealth device or HLC.

Yes and no.

The Y-wings are essentially range 1-2 anyway, since they do most their heavy lifting with their Ion Cannon follow-up shots. If they are in range 3 on the initial engagement round, then they essentially get a free Target Lock for next round, which isn't all bad. If they don't get the Ion shot, then they do about half the damage.

But ideally you need to fan out and get everyone more or less in parallel. I do like getting the bandits in closer if I can. I'm also paranoid about everything crashing and the Y's losing their actions. You absolutely don't want the Y's to lose their focus, because with the R4 Agro it essentially equals both a focus and a Target Lock. PS1 bandits in the front may or may not help with the crashing situation, depending on the matchup.

I have been toying around with splitting up the forces a little more and breaking out of formation flying, and trying to use at least one of the Y's or both of the Z's as flankers. I still have a lot to learn with flying this motley crew, especially as it pertains to setting up the rocks to get yourself some good lanes for the Y's to fly through.

Truth be told, I'm rather addicted to letting all three ships move at PS3 and shoot before PS2's too. Every matchup inevitably turns int a messy furball at some point, and being able to choose a Z or the HWK to move out of the way can be essential to keeping your actions.

That said I would love to see Tactician mixed in. It has a higher ceiling on the control aspect. 3 Ions and a tactician is a beautiful thing.

I agree with most of the analysis on the StarViper; it seems too expensive for what you can get out of it on the table most of the time. But I do think that Xizor's ability is under-appreciated. One of you almost had it, talking about how you need to make your Xizor squad so that "you want to shoot him, versus other ships."

In order to make Xizor work, he needs to be the main threat/target in your squad. That means everything else in the squad is not an attractive target. He also likes to fly with ships that have some bulk, in order to absorb attacks.

I like to load him up with upgrades; Vi, AT, AdvS, ID, and fly him with 3 Y-wings with autoblaster turrets. The Ys are too cheap and bulky to make good targets, but shooting at Xizor is not a good option either, because he can always hand off a hit to a Y-wing (after filtering it through his 3 defense dice). But if he survives to the late game, he becomes an arc-dodging nightmare; like an unholy combination of a B-wing and TIE Interceptor, or a high-PS aggressor without the limitation of the large base.

Fantastic episode fellas. Glad to see 'yuz back on the scene.

But c'mon. SHE-ZOR. SHEEE-ZOR!!
