a ma-3 goes thru a prox mine and rolls 1 crit. gets 2 hits (driect hit) still has shield but it dies, right?

No. Die Results -> Damage -> Cards. Proximity Mine rolls dice, which generates results. Those results turn into standard damage or critical damage. Damage (whether standard or critical) will always remove a shield token first, and only deals a card if there are no shields.
So if your scenario, one critical result becomes on critical damage, which checks for a shield and removes it. The damage card is never even dealt.
If you meant Proton Bomb: Proton Bomb Token: When this bomb token detonates, deal 1 faceup Damage card to each ship at Range 1 of the token. Then discard this token.
If the Damage card is a Direct Hit, then yes the MA-3 would be destroyed and removed with it's shield intact.

He mentioned rolling, so pretty sure it was actually a Proximity Mine he was asking about.
remember, kabooms cancel after booms. If your prox mine rolled boom, kaboom, blank, then
the boom takes out the shield
the kaboom hits the hull, resulting in a face up damge card (our target has one hull remaining before we flip the card. Flip, and direct hit. Syck is now vaped (removed from play)
kabooms simply remove 1 shield when you have shields, with one exception - proton bomb "bypasses" shields.
So everything said above is correct.
since only 1 kaboom was rolled in this instance, the syck should have lost it's shield, but that's it.
Remember, no green dice should have been rolled in this instance either.
