Torkil Mux with Flight Instructor?

By Stubby, in X-Wing

Would a flight instructor make Torkil Mux more survivable or would it be a waste of passenger slot and points? What about adding a stealth device too?

It would be more survivable, but FI is probably a pretty bad investment. Recon specialist is cheaper, and will probably give you more survivability for your crew slot.

FI should really be half the points it currently is. At 4 points its just way too expensive for what you get. Recon Spec, or Outlaw Tech are good options. I like OT as it really opens up the dial a bit. You won't be afraid to use those faster maneuvers.

Stealth device is really only good on ships with a base of 3 agility. Otherwise its far too easy to get shot-off without you really getting much benefit from it. HU or SU is a more reliable modification.

If you're defending against a ship with PS3+, you're almost certainly better off with a Recon Specialist than with a Flight Instructor: she's cheaper, affects all your [eyeball] results rather than just one, and is certain to change those [eyeball] results to [evade] results, rather than having a 3/8 chance.

If you're defending against PS1-2, the FI is much better--although arguably still not worth 4 points.

But since you can't guarantee that you'll get the useful benefit, and against the ships you're most worried about facing you're very likely to get the un-useful benefit, it's an upgrade that simply isn't used.

As for Stealth Device, I personally don't feel like Stealth Devices pay out their purchase prices on ships with 2 Agility. You're better off, statistically speaking, with a Hull Upgrade.

Torkil Mux will hopefully bring the attacker to PS0 which would allow a reroll of s blank

I'd take Navigator and use the change of maneuver to stay out of harms way.

Either that or go completely nuts with a Mandalorian Merc with Draw Their Fire and Tactical Jammer. Torkhil can hide quite safely there.

Torkil's PS is really too low to take advantage of reacting to your opponents moves with navigator.

Well, you could stay clear of swarms anyway. But you're right. Mandal Merc it is!

Thanks for the insight. I see the points about the Recon spec, but what if I take the Moldy Crow titlle instead? I can bank a few focus for later use. If I zero out an attackers PS with Torkil Mux' ability, then FI would allow me to reroll a blank and I could use a stored up defensive focus as well.

Flight Instructor + Moldy Crow seems like a problem solved! Throw in a Hull or Engine and that is one defensive ship.

You're looking at spending 35 points on him at that point. I think you'll be hard pressed to get 35 points of value out of Mux even in match-ups that his ability is strong in.

34 pts with a hull! Hehe. Blaster turret version for 33...

He's just such a good PS killer that it isn't a horrible idea if you have the pts. He isn't a horrid ship to be last on the board either. Do I like him better than Roark + Ion + Chewy crew? Probably not. But if that ship uses FI to save a ton of damage, it might be enough.

I think I'd rather run that on Paalob though, with Blaster. I DO want him to last a long long time after all. Would have to be considered over K4 and whatnot.

I'd worry about having enough focus tokens for a Blaster Turret in that build. If Flight Instructor is doing it's job on Mux, it's going to help you burn through focus tokens. I don't think I'd want to try to fuel a Blaster Turret at the same time.
