Regional locations?

By Hidatom, in X-Wing

Stores are not supposed to announce they have a regional until FFG does.

Le Griffon in Sherebrooke Quebec has a regional and has put it up on their website. Maybe FFG will revoke it for breaking the rules and move it to a place where people actually play the game. (WTF would they choose Sherebrooke?)

I thought that there were different rules in place for venues outside of the US? Because I know several in Europe or the UK have already announced their dates as well.

FFG chooses the Regional locations inside the U.S., and the applicable distributors choose the locations outside the U.S. That's why locations have already been announce for Canada.

They added two more region to the list

That all I know

Really? What regions did they add?

This is a topic I’ve thought a lot about, but before I give any opinions I have some questions for the community.

When deciding location do you think it’s more important that they always try and accommodate the most population or move them around each year so that different areas of the region have a chance to have a regional hosted nearby?

How many hours do you think casual X-Wing gamers are willing to drive to attend a regional tournament?

How about someone about someone who as a greater desire to go to regionals but perhaps not the time or means to attend regardless of location, how long do you think they would drive?

Once you hit the regionals level I'm not sure 'casual' is a fitting description for the target attendees.

As to the first few questions I think it needs to be a combination of both, to some extent. You want to shuffle things around year by year, but at the same time you don't want to be sticking them in the middle of nowhere just for the sake of moving them. With three per Region this year they'll hopefully be able to get it so that as long as you live near a major population center you'll have one nearby.

Maybe not casual but there will be a group of people that will attend if it is convenient. I'm just wondering what the average person would consider convenient.

According to Lion Rampant on Twitter when I asked, FFG is posing all regionals locations on their site today. Fingers crossed there is one in Maine since Fredericton Nb is only one in driving distance so far

the distributor for FFG product in Canada

Obviously you can't please everyone, but some of the regionals were in low-population areas. The Boise regional had 16 attendants.

I do hope they look at a population density map...

I kind of hope they give another to Boise. As much as there weren't a lot of players there, that was due to player choice. The venue was nice and the store was really cool.

I agree with the guy that said there should be a regional held somewhere along the 1-5 corridor, but it would be disappointing if all 3 end up on the western side of the region just because of population density.

If there is one in Boise I will most likely go this year. I've also heard Twin Falls has a thriving X-Wing community. That wouldn't be a bad spot to pull in all the southern Idaho people and perhaps some from the Salt Lake metro area if they don't get one again this year.

I don't think anyone (or at least not me) is asking for all the regionals be held along the I-5 corridor, but one would be nice.

Twin Falls is probably okay, but if they give a Regional event to Twin Peaks... you probably don't want to go to that one.

Well if Bellevue got a Netrunner Regional, that could be the reason X-Wing wasn't in the Seattle area.

What does a Netrunner regional have anything to do with X-wing?

I was wondering the same thing JO JO other than maybe they are concerned about space for both games.

FFG has shown reluctance in giving, in most cases, multiple events across all games to the same store/area.

Gameolgy in Montclair CA has "hinted" at a regional. Here is a post they made on the third of march in a facebook group.

"Regionals lists will be up in the next two weeks or so." so that again means anytime.

Maybe FFG does certainly not true here. Same store has Star Wars Imperial Assault, 40K Conquest LCG, and Star Wars LCG here.

I find it odd how the US ones are hidden and yet UK and Canada knows them.

I could see not giving the same store more than one regional, but the area thing doesn't make too much sense. If an area has the majority of the people that play the game, then host it there.

I'm not telling you what makes sense, I am telling you what FFG does. They have proven very out of touch with thier playerbase based on last year's alottment. I expect this year to be no better as the one leaked Regional location I am aware of (not for X-wing) is at a store that does not hold regular events for that game (they haven't ran a Store Championship for 2 years).

Yours and the UK are handled by the distributor not FFG. That is likely the reason.

Agreed that is the most likely reason.

Have you ever been to Idaho? Many people from out of state don't think there is much difference between the two. :)

Here we go. I haven't taken a good long look at the list yet, but for those of us in the Northwest, Vancouver, WA is pretty central to Seattle and Portland. Not bad.

One near me in Kansas City, and another relatively close in Bellevue, NE. Not too bad.
