Regional locations?

By Hidatom, in X-Wing

Any news on regionals in the U.S.A.?

I expect this to be the next big news for X-wing.

Stores have been/are being told over the past week. So I'd be suprised if they weren't announced soon.

It will probably cause a number of outcries.

how so? what do you know

It would be nice to know soon. Flights, hotels need to be booked so on and so forth.

They added two more region to the list

That all I know

It's the nature of the process that lots of people won't be very happy. Unless you live in Minneapolis, there's no guarantee that the nearest Regional tournament will be very near at all.

Your FLGs likely already knows if it has a Regional, but they aren't allowed to announce until FFG does.

Yep, last year we had X-wing an hour away from me in Kissimmee, FL, but the nearest Netrunner Regionals was up somewhere in Georgia. Come to think of it, if it's anywhere near Atlanta this year I do have some friends I could stay with... but I'm hoping I won't have to make an impromtu roadtrip for alt art Reina(Netrunner), Boba, and a shot at other goodies.

yeah I think we are all worry the the regional for our favorite game will be far away or inconvenient to get to.

Obviously you can't please everyone, but some of the regionals were in low-population areas. The Boise regional had 16 attendants.

I do hope they look at a population density map...

A Regionals location could be a reasonably good compromise between major population centers, though, without necessarily being located in one. But obviously if you end up with fewer people at a Regional than many places have for a Store Championship, though, someone goofed.

In talking to a store owner awhile ago, he applied to all the FFG Regionals last year and got the GoT Regional. He was saying FFG doesn't want to put Regionals for other games near each other. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but the X-wing Regional was 500 miles away from his store.

Maybe this is why it's taking them so long to determine locations?

yeah it must be hard to juggle all the game lines + finding good stores to run the events.

Was it Boise or Spokane? Either way, it doesn't take a geographer to know that that was nuts, given the population distribution.

But was there another FFG Regional (for any game) in Seattle?

can't be spokane. i was there last year. we had 35 people show up but i think a few dropped before the end of the day so i think it ended up at 32 for the final count

That was fairly well attended despite the large wildfires happening at the time. This time though, each region in the US will be receiving up to 3 regionals each. You can almost bet that there will be one somewhere along the I5 corridor because the outcry last year was pretty loud. And on the off chance that there isn't one, we are also getting one up here in Vancouver, just a couple hours north of Seattle.

As for other games, a quick search turned up that there was a Netrunner regionals in the Seattle area (Bellevue). Seems to be the only one they got though.

Well if Bellevue got a Netrunner Regional, that could be the reason X-Wing wasn't in the Seattle area.

Yeah, I just came home from a weekend in Vancouver, BC. I don't know if I'll be on the continent at that time, but I'll sure try to make it.

I think that stores have to submit themselves to be considered, right? I know that Atomic Empire in Durham, NC have submitted themselves for a regional, but don't know if they will get it. If no one submits for a general area, that could be the problem.

For my sake, I hope Durham gets a regional. I don't want to drive to Richmond, Va or Atlanta for the regional. I have a bed to crash on in Durham.

Stores are not supposed to announce they have a regional until FFG does.

Le Griffon in Sherebrooke Quebec has a regional and has put it up on their website. Maybe FFG will revoke it for breaking the rules and move it to a place where people actually play the game. (WTF would they choose Sherebrooke?)

I by acccident posted the wrong link, stupid tablet. :)

I'm not sure what a Warmachine unit stat sheet has to do with X-wing regionals, but the choice likely involves centrality to other locations, and venue size. Not any store can host a 60+ player tournament. At least that's how big ours in Kissimmee, which is near Orlando and right in the middle of the state, was last year.

Just looking at a map (without knowing anything about Quebec's geography), it looks like it's more or less equidistant from Montreal and Quebec City, as well as close enough to the border to pull some Vermonters as well.

Quite frankly, I was surprised to see they actually got a Regional. The logical place would have been somewhere in Montreal, half of the province population live there.

But, as far as I'm concerned, I don't really care where it will be; I'm just glad we have a Regional somewhere in the province and Le Griffon is a nice place.
