Idea's for 9 Player XWing Game

By hendersondayton, in X-Wing

I have a large group coming over for a game night and we were thinking about doing X-Wing. We have a lot of ships among the group:

X-Wings 7
Tie 12
Y-Wings 3
A-Wings 4
Tie Int. 6
Tie Adv. 3
Firespray 3
Millenium Falcon 3
Tie Bomber 1
B-Wing 1
Lambda Class Shuttle x1

Correlian Corvette Expansion x1

I need some help trying to decide what we can put together for a game with a large assortment of ships and players. We have 3-4 hours to play so I am pretty open to suggestions.

Thoughts?

Two things come to mind - furball, where everyone builds a 35pt ship, or 5v4 at like ~300pts (without the Corvette).

Furball is the one with waves right? Cannot say that I know how that works.

Furball is just a free for all smash with each player piloting one 35-point ship

That's escalation. A Furball is where everyone flies one ship into this massive clusterfrack and that last man standing wins. Or last team.

If you had scum, I'd recommend a 3v3v3 fight. Each player is designated a target. S1 kills r2 kills I3 kills S1. S2 kills R3 kills I1 kills S2. S3 kills R1 kills I2 kills S3. This may seem a bit complicated, especially when it comes to remembering which ships belong to which person.

Or, the classic kill-the-team-to-your-left variant. Scum kills Imps kills Rebels kills Scum

I've got a couple of scenarios on mission control that may be appropriate.

"Reconnaissance in force" is a scenario with three mission objectives, so that the game is spread out over the table (6x3).

"RAID on Fondor" also has multiple objectives, but features a Corvette. The rules are a bit more involved, also.

Neither were designed for 9(!) players, but could be adapted to work with that many without too much of a headache.

Furball is probably the easiest way to go, though

You could try "hunger games". Place a circle of asteroids in the middle of the map, with some tokens close to each asteroid. Each of these tokens represents a random ship upgrade.

Each player flies a single generic ship at whatever point range you choose, and can use any upgrade that their ship collects (no upgrade bar limitations!). This can result in some really fun combos like an a-wing with HLC, Tie Advanced with an ion turret, etc. It's a fun, casual game, with lots of laughs!

This sounds like GREAT Fun!

Seriously..thank you to everyone for your responses. I appreciate them!

I think 9 players is probably too many, because the downtime between turns is too long. I'd split that into two groups and run furballs.

A Race. Track layout and laps setup as needed. Modded rules as thus: Shooting phase is moved to before activation. Die results modified as thus:each boom reduce the speed of next maneuver by one. kabooms do a normal hit.
