The Optimum Soontir

By JRMan, in X-Wing

Soontir has been my favourite pilot to fly since he came out. He's not always the most competitive in the turret meta but he's lots of fun. PTL is a no brainer and is always on Soontir, as for modifications I have flown and faced a mix of targeting computer, stealth device, and shield / hull upgrade.

With the release of autothrusters, which looks like an auto-include on him, we have to choose 1 other mod to go along with it. Which do you think will combine with autothrusters to make the optimum Soontir? Does anyone think autothrusters isn't an auto-include?

For myself, I love targeting computer to really bring the pain on turns you have arc-dodged and don't need to go defensive, so I will probably try that combo first. If I wanted to go more defensive, I would go stealth device and autothrusters as the two play off of and improve eachother to make Soontir extremely slippery. I don't see any point in the shield or hull upgrade.

Stealth Device goes great with AT, increases your chance to get a blank or an evade at that crucial moment.

I'd say the 35 points Fel is the one to use:

PTL, Autothrusters, and Stealth

Or

PTL, Autothrusters, and Hull Upgrade

For me - I find that Shield Upgrade is an auto-include, more so than the thrusters.

Because when that crit finally gets through my stack it always ends up crippling him completely..

The optimal setup for me post-wave 6 would then be PTL, Shield Upgr., (Title,) and Auto-thrusters.

I think if you're not going Stealth, Shield Upgrade is the way to go. Because crits are cancelled last, they're the ones getting through, so the 1 point to potentially avoid a crit is probably worth it. There's also stuff like Ten Numb and Vader crew where there are basically unblockable crits.

Shield MIGHT be the autoinclude if you are ever going to face a Decimator with Vader. Otherwise I'd say just go with Stealth.

Typically, Stealth gives you the best shot. Especially if you Evade, PTL Focus, and get a 2nd Focus. You are almost unhittable at that point.

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

Soontir Fel + Push the Limit + Royal Guard TIE + Stealth Device + Autothrusters

You should be zipping all over the board and avoiding head on passes at all cost. You play a very long game. If you get caught, Focus + Evade.

stealth and thrusters if you have the points to throw around. the combination is quite devastating with soontir's turtle protocol and will more than likely end up canceling far more damage than either shield or hull (vader pending, ofc)

for my lists, I never have more than 34 to use and so the good baron ends up riding dirty with only autothrusters

PTL, Autothrusters, and Shield

You need that shield for the random decimator with Vader.

Not just Vader. things that deal crits are going to be more common with all the soontirs flying around. The mangler cannon (with or without Ten Numb), proton bombs, hell even marksmanship+gunner might start making a come back if autothruster Fel starts scaring the crap out of people like Phantoms did in wave 4.

I really love targeting computer though, for both Turr & Fel. But if there's even the slightest chance of crits flying around, you really need that shield upgrade or it could be game over regardless of the dice...

I just tried out Fel with Title, PTL, thrusters and shield two nights ago and it was very impressive. Fel took one damage throughout the fight and the shield soaked it up. Fel is much more free to fly recklessly now thanks to thrusters. One of the best "fixes" to come down the line yet. Fel and Vader are going to be best buddies in the near future!

I flew Stealth Soontir at a tournament over the weekend and while stealth device served me pretty well, I agree that shield is probably better. Manglers are going to be very common for a while, and being able to tank that first crit that gets through before you can soften up their squad is going to make Soontir a lot more durable. Stealth Device was okay, but the problem is that you're not always going to have Autothrusters be active, which is where the shield is going to be much better than the 1 extra green dice.

Shield upgrade is my favorite. I don't care much for stealth device, as dice will fail you eventually anyway... best to have that shield to eat it up instead of going from 4 to 2 dice because you got a really bad crit.

If I don't have 4 points for shield, I will typically spend the 3 remaining points on another ship and make sure Soontir doesn't get shot at.

In the DeciVader era, Shield> all. There were plenty of horror stories over the weekend of people who pulled out their shiny Stealth Soontir, loaded him with Autothrusters, and died with three face-up criticals and their Stealth Device still intact.

PTL, thrusters , stealth is best until you see enough people being cute with vader on decimator, then try to find one more point for a shield instead of stealth.

PTL, Autothrusters, Stealth. I'll risk it, but maybe my local meta's just not as DeciVader or Doom Shuttle heavy (so I can acknowledge that others might have different issues).

I used to run Targetting Computer and Stealth, but it was basically a "placeholder" two points, getting me ready for Autothrusters to hit. I found I very rarely used the computer, and now that I'm playing without it I don't miss it.

The only time I think I'd ever use it is if all I need to dodge an arc and still be in range 1 is a single boost/barrel roll, then TL + free focus. If there aren't any turrets or any other ships shooting at me. No reason to have that extra focus or the evade if you're not going to get shot at.

That basically never happens until it's down to 1v1.
