New Game, Great Anticipation

By Beatty, in Star Wars: Armada

So I have been playing games for years and even though I can be more pragmatic about what games I play compared to some here I still have played many different game systems and have watched as new games are released.

That said I have never seen this much discussion and excitement for a game in the prerelease stage. Armada maybe coming in on the heels of a great game like X-Wing but even then the level of commitment players already have without even having a game under their wing is incredible.

Correct me if I am wrong but this is a fantastic sign for FFG.

I agree, I think that FFG has a great lead-in from X-Wing both in experience of mechanics that work or don't work with the lore and production of the product but also in the fan buildup as many of us here are current X-Wing players. (though for how much longer might remain to be seen :P )

Everything I have seen about Armada sofar makes me confident it will be equal to or better than X-Wing in every way, and given how much I love X-Wing (and how many I have bought!), I am sure it will be a huge success.

People have been waiting a long time for a game like this.

Edit, apparently I don't know how to construct a proper sentence.

There is nothing great about this expectation, dammit! I'm tired of waiting for it, so I went and spent $200 on X-wing stuff after already spending $200 on the Armada pre-orders. **** you, FFG, **** you the hell!

There's a few things that go into it, I think:

1) X-Wing is really popular, both for being a really fun game, and the great quality of its minis. Armada can draw a lot of excitement from this already established community that already knows how good FFGs products can be.

2) Like X-Wing, having the SW name attached means you can guess what ships will be released at some point, which gives a lot of hype for free. It's kinda hard to find a thread in this forum that doesn't talk about when we'll see Mon Cal ships, or whether or not we'll get a SSD.

3) The delay. Since it's been so long since the game's announcement to its release, there's a lot of anticipation built.

I know I keep obsessively checking my email waiting for a shipment notification, and I'm sure a lot of other people here are in the same boat.

Well I spent a lot of money on those WOTC minis. Starship Battles I think. The game had terrible mechanics, and relatively low quality minis. The only real advantage was you got a lot of ships in each box at $20ish.

Now that I am older, great gameplay is critical, as I have extremely limited time availability. High quality miniatures are important so I can display them when not playing (which is most of the time...).

And money is no longer as much of an issue any more. I spend $60 a week on gas. Buying a $20 good looking mini isn't that much... ( well, it was still a lot of money, but with the above two items, it seems like it is worth it)

First, cannot like this thread enough.

Been waiting on a good fleet / squadron scale Star Wars game since 1977. I have tried the majority of space combat games released between '77 and present day. .

From what I have seen of Armada -- it may be the game. Trying -- very hard -- to maintain a touch of skepticism. But these rules look really well done (so far).

Armada Pluses:

  • Movement with "realistic" physics / pseudo-vectorred movement -- movement tool = minimal fuss (?)
  • Fast and intense combat
  • Fighters and "capital" ships appear well / properly balanced
  • Basic concepts appear well tested via X-Wing minis
  • Star Wars IP -- a definite draw

Totally in the same boat. I've wanted a good Star Wars fleet game for at least 25 years...basically ever since i started gaming.

Note i said "good". I spent a decent amount on the crappy Starship Battles thing, so imagine how much i'm willing to spend on this :D

Regarding the movement tool, I was surprised that even the developers don't seem to have thought of shortening the ruler. If you are moving only two for example, there is no need to stick the whole **** ruler out there and be knocking over half the game board. You could easily shorten up on the ruler and measure from the second to last segment to the last, for example, and leave all the excess behind your ship where it is far less likely to knock stuff over. I may buy the accesory ruler just to make a one movement short ruler to use in tight situations.

They actually suggest this very thing in the article advertising the standalone ruler :)

I couldn't agree more with this entire assessment. The fervor in anticpation is almost palpable...

I've never been so excited about a gaming release in my life. It really is crazy! I'm sort of enjoying the anticipation, maybe I'm crazy but I don't think I will ever have quite this level of excitement about a game again in my life so I figure may as well enjoy the ride....

im buying this for.:

- the very good presentation (miniatures, grafics on cards) which makes it interesting for none hard core table top people to play with

- the streamlined handling which also allows for a broader audience:

-- incorporating to hit and damage tables right into the dice. There could be more dice colors though!

-- every kind of effect or subrule directly printed on the card or token or model -> no need for reference sheets or rulebook tables.
