Scum Huge ship poll

By ldodt, in X-Wing

The poll's been up for two weeks and if were looking for a winner so far its still the crusader (Must be something about Mandalor ships that causes scum fans to geek out). But the spread's fairly even much more so then my Imperial ship poll by comparison was a Vigil landslide. In another two weeks I'm going to close the poll, Gabe has his poll up now so if you want to chat all things DP-20 related you can take them there. Personally I think FFG will sooner do a model of the original renderings of the system patrol craft from the x-wing computer games then the DP-20. :P

...

A thing I hate about that kind of vote is when the winner goes and acts like the "won it going away" and thus all the opponents should be ignored. Right now here are the standings mentioned as of 119 votes:

Crusader - 29% (34 votes?)

Minstrel Class yacht - 27% (32 votes?)

Action VI + Interceptor - 27% (they are so close to the same ship and if you showed me a picture of the Interceptor I'd have said it was an Action transport) (25 + 7 = 32 votes?)

Gozanti - 18% (I suspect the heavy Imperial presence in the Rebels show doesn't help is as Scum) (21 votes?)

This is a perfect example of where the 'democratic' system breaks down. Crusader win! Declares vote is clear sign that it is right way to go. Completely ignores the vast majority that did not vote that way.

What your talking about is something people call a mandate Steve. Politicians who are elected will often say they have a mandate from the people for their policies over the oppositions (even if they win by a very small margin) but a true mandate would be if the result is one that was overwhelming in favor. The ship that FFG uses is pretty much decided by management and fan popularity probably isn't their top concern they have to consider things like can the ship be manufactured and sold in a way that's economical to fans and profitable to themselves. While the crusader is top of the poll currently its only by a few votes and only about hundred votes you can hardly say that's proof that its the ship to use anyone else in any of the other ships camps can pack up and go home. But if the crusader got something like 70% of the votes with the other 30% distributed among other ships then the it going and ignoring the other ships would probably more justified. The results of my last poll are more telling with the vigil having a clear lead (but still probably not large enough for a good mandate) people wanted it but it was probably too large a size to make it marketable. They could have scaled up a Gozanti or scald down a Lancer to fit their wants but it was quite obvious that the fans wanted a dagger shaped ship so love it or hate it we ended up with the Raider.

I included the Interceptor in the poll because it was all the comments that the Action VI was a dust-buster in previous threads and it would give us a slight idea about how much visual styling trumps significance in the EU. You cant really justify lumping their votes together as some people might love one ship but despise the other.

I think when we are looking for huge ships we gotta really think about what ships fit well on the two stands bridged by a cardboard rectangle as that's the system FFG seems comfortable selling us. So ships that are about 2-3 times as long as they are wide will probably be preferred by them as they fit the base footprint. The Crusader and Action VI fit the profile but I wonder if the Minstrel with its maneuvering rods that hang down on the perfect angle to sweep over other ships in its quarter of the board might be considered too wide of a footprint to be a viable choice (these rods are described as retractable so maybe if they made it a model it would have them as retracted).

Tl;dr "I did say the spread was fairly even."

Incidentally, thanks to this poll, I just found out about this little gem - at 160 metres, it would seem to fit nicely into the Scum & Villany "Epic Sweet Spot":

Don't thank me ... thank the Dark forces.

It would be kinda cool to see this ship as the king of the scum faction i just see those maneuver jets getting in the way when playing or snapping off when transporting it >.<

Yeah, the maneuver jets look potentially a little snappy, but no more so than the X-Wing lasers. As long as you don't leave it resting on them.

The Wikipedia entry for it sounds pretty appropriate for a Scum list as well. "Star Jewel" title card and "Star Jewel Guard" pilot cards for Scum Z-95s, anyone?

It would also be pretty cool to see it flying in formation with this lovely lady:

Pulsar skate!!!

I love the Pulsar Skate so much. But I think she's a large ship, as opposed to a huge.

A large pulsar skate would be a great addition.

Baudo-class

The skate is supposedly a modified Baudo but this strikes people as weird because they look so different. I think there are reasonable explanations to this using real world examples such as one type of car being rebuilt into another .

Its in the order of extreme pimp my ride though perhaps the smuggler Skate has more desirable performance specs over the pleasure craft of the Baudo it does seem to have more engines.

Apparently the real-world explanation is that the people illustrating the comics didn't bother looking at the existing visual references. This is my own commentary, but apparently the people illustrating the comics also didn't know what a skate is.

Well those comic artists probably didn't have the internet back then to tell them what one looks like. So we shouldn't be too harsh on them they were probably getting paid in peanuts anyway.

But surely the world had public aquariums in 1996, right? And... I don't know, Microsoft Encarta?

Maybe the comic artists mistook skate (as in: fish) for skate (as in: roller).

It does kind of look like a foot, after all...

I really prefer the Baudo design for the Skate. It's always described as looking like sea-life... and boy oh boy does that other design not look aquatic at all.

I'm quoting myself from a few weeks ago, but it looks like a minivan getting... personally acquainted with a bulldozer.

It's called the Pulsar Skate , and the Baudo -class yachts were supposed to be one-off works of art individually commissioned from a particular shipwright. Yet there are people who somehow look at those two images and believe the blocky, industrial design is the "real" Skate .

Baudo-class yacht?

Or Baudo-class yacht?

Is the artist really going to stuff around with Microsoft Encarta or go on trips to an aquarium when they have strict deadlines to meet? Wouldn't the blame really be with the comic's editor who signed off on the work and not the artist? Never read the comic's in 1996 i was too busy playing tie fighter or dark forces or whatever. It looks more like they modified the Personal Luxury Yacht 3000 maybe they got confused over the yacht bit. Back then if you asked me what the starwars yacht's looked like, the lady luck would have been the ship I pointed at.

I think the mix up with the designs might keep the mouse house from letting fantasy flight use this ship. I'm not that fussed on either design personally. There are other ships in its size bracket id rather see first. Like the Skipray or the YT-2000 (Yes I know we already have two other yt's)

I'd like to note that FFG chose the better (read: more skate-like) Baudo design for a recent EotE book.

AND it's new in-house art as far as I can tell.

Star Jewel's just pulled ahead of the Crusader. Its a pretty close fight between those two ships. So time to talk a bit about stats and cards and what these epic ships might look like in the box.

I'm a bit worried the crusader would be considered too similar to the CR-90 but it would be cool to see Tyber Zann and they could match the ship up with a Rihkxyrk assault fighter and the ship would fit the anti-starfighter role nicely.

Wild Karrde has more potential for cards and crew while it might not have the firepower to match the CR-90 or Raider it could make a very good command ship with its spy and information networks. It also had its own cloaking device but I doubt we would see it working like the phantom's as funny as a barrel rolling huge ship would be. It would also have its own docking bay so pairing this ship up with a starfighter seems likely.

Star Jewel is hard to see theme wise how this would be a bad fit. Especially if you get this guy:

Six hidden turbo lasers and its own star jewel z-95 guards. The only problem with the Star jewel is how do you follow an act like that?

Also - and this is where it gets interesting for me - it has a landing platform. Which could introduce some kind of carrier mechanic to Epic play, or add some great scenarios and options for cinematic play.

Well Alex did say in six years time he hopes x-wing is still going maybe by then we'll see the Star Jewel, Wild and Crusader. :P

Yeah, hopefully by then we'll have a full compliment of Epic ships.

I'm still not convinced by the Raider myself. The Imperials are in a tricky situation, but with the Minstrel-class yacht, the Interceptor Frigate and Action VI Scum are in a much better place when it comes to Epic scale possibilities.

I'm not sure if the rebels have too many more epic ship options either really maybe a Braha'tok-class gunship? They may just end up designing new ships just for X-wing would be better then ending up with weird obscure cargo ship from an rpg.

I wouldn't have thought the Rebels needed any more, to be honest - the GR-75 and CR-90 are probably more than enough. Matching those numbers (eventually) with both the Empire and Scum would make for plenty of options for Epic and Cinematic play.

Of course, once Episode 7 rolls around, who knows what we might see...
