Hive inside visual representation problem

Yet again, excellent answers, that does help. Thanks. Perhaps one could add some massive foundations that reach into the lower levels.

I guess that the lower levels are effectively sealed from the upper ones, the underground ones at least, you might have guarded elevators or whatever between the higher levels. You'd have to find a crack between levels that nobody (-important) knows about to get to a higher level....

(note that this is written after working with some industrial strength cleaners today, my mind is a little slow!)

Well not effectively sealed, but there is of course a very much present border between levels. A multitude of elevators, staircases and occuring cracks can be used to navigate to lower levels. However since a hive is such a huge structure it will experience some shifting in the lowest levels. Due to the occurence of hive quakes where sections (and sometimes entire spires!) can collapse, some areas might be blocked of for centuries, and other areas having previously been blocked off get's "opened" by new cracks (it's when this happens that reclaimators and other people interested in archaeotech have a very busy time trying to find really old areas that might hide technological treasures from the hive's distant past).
