Went to my first proper tournament with other people that can actually play. Every time I played in the past, it was with immediate friends and family and that I have to teach the game to. It was really refreshing to play with people that are as passionate about the game as I am, if not more so! Everyone there was really jovial and I had a ton of fun.
I never use 4 ship rebel builds and I have not used these kinds of ships in a long while, so this was largely an experiment for me.
First game was a complete tabling of an opponent with no losses. He ran 2 sigma phantoms and a shuttle: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Galactic%20Empire&d=v3!s!54:36,-1,95,29:4:14:;76:36,39:-1:8:;76:36,39:-1:8:
The Y-wings were able to ionlock the phantoms while Hobbie stress locked them and eventually gunned them down. Outmaneuvering the shuttle was simple after the support was gone. Nobody bothered shooting at Tarn, but he only got one or 2 good shots in the whole game.
Another note: the guy painted his phantoms like Batman and Robin and his shuttle was Alfred. He has another phantom painted like batgirl.
Second game was an incredibly narrow loss. Against the only other rebel player, everyone else was either experimenting with scum or the autothrusters. http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel%20Alliance&d=v3!s!5:27,-1,69:-1:3:;44:-1,22,-1,-1:-1:-1:;44:-1,22,-1,-1:-1:-1:;32:72:-1:-1:
The prototype pilot was blocking and being a general pain in the ass the whole game. Hobbie made an inordinate amount of saves against the opening volley of fire, so everyone else was able to focus down 1 B-wing before he died. Hobbie stressed Luke out in a big *********** as the fleets met. Eventually lost another Y-wing, but not before ionizing Luke off the table edge. Tarn had to make a bad turn later on that resulted in being sent over the edge by less than a millimeter when making a speed 1 bank. While that was happening my second Y-wing had managed to hammer the second B-wing by being just out of arc thanks to the based ion turret.
The game ran to time (the TO said to play out the last round and call it) and the B-wing had 1 hull left, the prototype was untouched, and the Y-wing had a shot. Crit and focus to one evade. In my rush to get to shooting to potentially win I FORGOT TO TAKE AN ACTION THAT TURN ENTIRELY. So I lost all thanks to a simple slip of my mind.
The third game was an utter nightmare though, this guy was **** good and was running dual IG-2000's. http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Scum%20and%20Villainy&d=v3!s!109:18,43,23,-1,-1,108:20:-1:;110:18,43,23,-1,-1,108:20:-1: I never faced one before.
Flew in a formation to try and focus one down. Hobbie was evaporated before even getting to stress once thanks to gunner-lite and HLC. Tried to zoom past at full throttle with the Y-wings to broadtide with ion turrets with the assumption that they would have to move forwards. Both ships used inertial dampers and I was caught in the open with stress and my pants down. After that I was pretty much mopped up in 2-3 turns. Not even tarn and R7 could do anything against B's ability to do more attacks. Got a grand total of 1 damage on him, the guy was always behind or at range 3, so all my plans were useless. I largely blame being completely outplayed. This guy was playing 3 turns ahead of me and I just could not block him or anything.
The people were great and many laughs were had and hands were shaken. Even got a charming little deckbox in spite of my lower ranking. Supported the store hosting the game by buying a starviper. Looking forwards to the next event!
