Blaster Turret and R4 Agromech

By Randito, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Does the focus you spend to attack with a blaster turret trigger the R4 Agromech's ability?

1. Spend focus to perform blaster attack

2. Trigger's Agromech. Acquire target lock

3. Roll dice. Spend target lock. Reroll dice.

This is without the title BTL-A4 title. Just a turret and salvaged astromech.

Is this valid? Seems valid to me but just want to make sure. It seems like it

pointed out in an earlier thread, the FAQ for Dark Curse indicated that spending a focus to trigger an attack is part of the attack, so I would say yes R4 Aggromech triggers

I really don't understand why there seems to be so much confusion over "Attack[Focus] Spend 1 Focus token to perform this attack" when no-one seems to have any trouble with "Attack [Target Lock] Spend your Target lock to perform this attack"

There's plenty of rules in this game which require careful intrepretation

This ain't one of them

The question isn't driven by the difference as much as it is the timing. There's very little that triggers on spending a target lock, but there's a lot that triggers on spending a focus. And if you peek over into the Drea thread, when there is something that triggers on a target lock it generates pretty much the identical questions.

Wen you select secondary weapons and when you pay the costs for those weapons is actually rather problematic. At the simple end of the scale, it's easy to overlook the text in Step 2 (because everyone knows you just roll dice there). At the hard/detailed/specific end, secondary weapons are actually incredibly problematic, with nonfunctional rules, poor wording, and outright paradox in their function and rulings.

So yeah, the confusion is actually kinda understandable.

So to be clear, spending the focus for blaster turret procs r4? And secondary, you may spend said target lock on the attack your currently using.

Yes.

I can see the confusion. R4 says "when attacking", and blaster turret says "spend 1 focus to perform this attack". It can sort of be read that you are spending the focus before the attack to perform the attack, but in truth R4's "when attacking" is referring to the attack step of the turn. See, I confused myself trying to write an explanation.

And for anyone not reading the whole thread, yes, r4 triggers on blaster turret activation.
