WIP: Station Assault

By GrandAdmiralCrunch, in Star Wars: Armada

Greetings Commanders.

Yesterday I started work on a custom scenario for Armada. I know what many of you are thinking, "Krunch you old so'n'so, we don't have the game yet...we don't even have the rules yet!" That is true, and why this is still a very early Work In Progress.

A lot of gamers don't have the luxury of a stable game group, and I want to give them a option to play armada by their lonesome. Even those who have friends available could use it for practice. Over in X-Wing, the number 1 mission for a long time has been a solo mission between a fat Han, and an interceptor. I thought for Armada, we could instead use Stations as a big fat, Dangerous target.

I created some custom stations based on the XQ stations from the old X-Wing series. I call these the XR's:

They will be stationary targets that can be printed out in sections so that you can mix and match sections for a random encounter, or keep together for a more uniform threat.

I will keep adding content to them as more info comes out. If anybody has comments or requests, let me know. I'm hoping this will be a fun addition to the game that will draw in people who might not otherwise play it, and give everybody a way to have fun with the game even when no one else is around.

Interesting. Can the stations rotate during an engagement?

Interesting. Can the stations rotate during an engagement?

That is an option i'm seriously considering. That or an AI shield redistribution.

I know I will have to do a lot of play testing to make sure it is suffienctly challenging at all difficulty levels.

I like what you have so far. Its a great idea for people just starting to learn the rules too.

admiralcrunch, does your awesomeness have no end???

Hehe, this is FANTASTIC!

Just posted over in MaverickNZ's 'Armada as a RPG experience' thread.

I can see these stations coming in very very handy, my friend!

Edit: Dammnit! Hit post too soon! I went back and drooled over the stations again. So epic -thanks admiral!

Thank you both!

These are available for any project in the community. I'm looking forward to the RPG experience as well.

Today I will give a little update. In a second i'll post updated pics, and give a little background in universe and out on how I designed them.

You'll notice I added a hull value, and anti-squadron armament. I also included a track so players can keep track of shields. I wanted something simple for print and play. 10 or 20 sided dice would work just as well, but not everybody will have access to those. I'm considering doing the same for hull damage, but i'm not sure how that will affect the damage deck.

The updated Stations:

S-Module

6sHyN0w.png

The S-Module is lightly armed and designed to mount onto any XR platform. Big enough to service most Smaller Starships, the shipyard section is a popular addition to most service Stations.

I made the S-Module to be the training wheels of solo Armada. An S-Station won't fire back, so you can concentrate more on manuevering your own ships, lining them up for clear shots, and keeping them from going off the board. They can also be added to a randomized pile to make the combat a little easier.

XR-E

U66XXNF.png

The XR-E is a popular entrylevel platform for the civilian market. These stations have sprung up along the most heavily used trade routes.

The XR-Easy is the next step up for players who are ready to face something that fires back.

It's Current Hit dice are equal to a CR-90. Its Shield Value is all four CR-90 faces added together. Its Hull value is the CR-90 added to the Victory SD.

XR-M

2LrZcCB.png

The XR-M was designed to monitor dangerous area prone to pirate attacks, or other nefarious dealings. Civilian ownership is restricted, and most belong to larger governments.

The XR-Medium is the next step up for players who want a fair challenge.

It's Current Hit dice are equal to a Gladiator SD. Its Shield Value is all four Gladiator faces added together. Its Hull value is the Gladiator added to the Victory SD.

XR-H

QE5S1by.png

The XR-H is a heavily armed station meant to monitor and defend dangerous or contested ares of space. They are illegal for civillian ownership.

The XR-Hard is the next step up for players who want a difficult challenge.

It's Current Hit dice are equal to a Victory SD. Its Shield Value is all four Victory faces added together. Its Hull value is the Victory added to another Victory SD.

T-Module

YbPq7mz.png

The T-Module is lightly armed and designed to mount onto any XR platform. The large storage tanks can hold enough fuel to fill even the big Corellian ships!

I made the T-Module to add some variety. Though unarmed, these modules explode when destroyed. Since the goal of these missions is to destroy all 4 modules, you will have to gauge your fleet's posistion before delivering the killing blow if you don't want to be caught in the resulting blast.

Edit: I swear i've spent as much time correcting typos as I did writing it in the first place.

Let that be a lesson, no writing before caffeine.

Looks very interesting. Maybe i missed it, but do you need the yellow dots for targeting each zone?

Yellow Dots? I'm sorry, I don't follow.

Line of sight dots

Line of sight dots

Ahh, I intend for LoS to follow the natural edges of the station sections. I'm going to try to emphasize them more.

I hadn't noticed the yellow dots before. Is there any signifigance to their design, or are they only used to signify different zones?

Edited by admiralcrunch

Yeah, the dots are used for all LOS calculations. There are some extensive discussions regarding attack arcs vs defence arcs. It's all done by drawing a straight line between the yellow dot in the attacking arc and the defending arc, then checking for intersections with the arc lines.

Thank you very much for that info. I must have missed it. Here is an updated drawing including them:

Yeah, that's it. And depending on how far out you place the dot, it will effect who the station can shoot and who can shoot the station differently. I believe attacks must not intersect with the projected arc lines or you cannot draw line of fire. While the defence only needs to check for intersection with the arc line printed on the card (not projected off it like attacks).

Hehe. Thank you admiralcrunch for the space station awesomeness.

And thank you Angry Penguin for picking up on the Yellow Dots.

These space stations are only going to make our scenarios and games all the more richer to play out! So so excited. :D

Hrm...although, I don't think this will put an end to your project admiralcrunch, I think we will have to take the new information we have from the "No Defense Tokens at Speed 0" thread.

Since space stations will be stationary...they may be at a disadvantage and will not be able to use Armada's Defense Token mechanism.

:(

There are going to be a few exceptions to standard rules for this project, and it's going to take some playtesting on my part to get it to work right.

Most Objectives won't work with this, (Assault, probably; Defense and Navigation not so much.)

Most Commanders won't provide a benefit to the station.

I will have to find a way to implement Fighters, command tokens, and other bits OR find work arounds so that it will be interesting, and fun without them.

I don't expect it to be quick or easy, but I plan to keep working on it till it becomes a valued add on for the community. Also, Any and all feedback will be welcomed to help make it better.

Hehe. Awesome, just awesome!

Can't wait to marry these up with "MaverickNZ's Campaign Scenarios".

We could even look at re-creating some of the TIE Fighter Campaigns.

Outpost D34.

SO excited over this!

May have to Shapeways some Gunboats, Assault Transports and the like for some 'Disable, board and capture' operations.

My guess is that the forum will go somewhat dormant when everyone gets their Core Sets...we'll all be busy learning the rules and getting a feel for the game, then we'll flood the boards with more ideas and requests for additional content to make Armada even richer than it is all ready panning out to be!

Thanks again admiral! :D

Edit: Can't spell for the life of me today! Edited again to include link to MaverickNZ's awesome thread. -this would be more helpful for newcommers reading through this thread. :)

Yup, will definitely be keen to look at using some of these station elements in narrative missions :)

Necroposting for a good cause.

Admiralcrunch? Please do not let this thread die. :)

I am sure we will have much need for it in the near future once imaginations and dreams take root in all our Armada fans.

I personally plan to print these awesome stations out and paste them onto some cardboard with double-sided adhesive tape.

Let the Armada Universe come to life!!!

I think I saw a KS for a modeled version of this exact station a week or so ago. It even looked to be a proper scale, though i cannot be sure.

Hehe.

Nice find, Angry Penguin.

Although I think I like Admiralcrunch's designs better. They remind me of the platforms from the TIE Fighter games. :D

No worries. My plan was to post some updates after I received my core, and was able to start play testing the station. Maybe do some session reports. I got my core yesterday, so I hope to have some new content on here soon.
