Does it bother anyone else that FFG could have easily used about 50% less material to package almost every expansion? esp the box ones
The amount of box and plastic in the most wanted pack is a bit silly

It bothers me, but I understand it. If we all sat down and thought about it, we could reason that everything you're getting in the box is priced right compared to other products. But when you're browsing the product in a store, you're not necessarily reading all the components online and making in-depth comparison. The larger box is a subliminal way of communicating content to the potential buyer. If someone paid $40 for Most Wanted and it was in the same box as an Aces pack, they would feel like they are getting cheated even though there is more content, and this is simply because of the psychology of package sizes.
It is still extremely wasteful.

The amount of plastic used today is a bit silly.![]()
Meh. Marketing.
Not really.
I do, but for a slightly different reason.
The best place to store X-wing minis is in the specific plastic holder they come in. For the single-ship packages the size is fine, especially as you can fit them nicely in the core game box. The large ships are also pretty good as they fill their box OK, and two can (just) fit in a single box if the cardboard stiffener is removed.
But the two-ship sets? There's a hell of a lot of wasted packaging in there - and Scum and Villiany is just crazy! I still have to carry the whole - extremely bulky - box around if I want those ships, despite the wasted volume. For the aces set I'm pretty sure that 4+ normal ships would go in there with the right packaging - and possibly 6-8 in the scum box.
Carrying these things on the bus is already getting a little tricky, and will only get worse as I add more ships...
Edited by HedgehogmechThey're just re-using existing packaging. The Aces boxes are the same as the large ship boxes. Most Wanted is the same size as the Decimator box. Why design and set up production for two additional sizes of box when you can just repurpose ones you're already using?
Most Wanted is the atrocious about this. I think the regular packs are okay, but aces are pushing it quite a bit, especially MW.

I think we have a winner.
I have no complaints the way Ffg does thier packaging...Impressed with the design features ; encased miniature with the box to hold it in...Alot of creativity and unique cover art...This makes X-wing stand out amongst other miniature games...Less chance for broken ships and easier to display as well...
Also means if a box is a little crushed the minis will be fine.
My guess is a lot of the excessive plastic has to do with protecting the tiny little miniatures and their tiny little guns, turrets and sticky-off-bits from all the punishment they'd take being shipped around the world.

Maybe. But I bet Most Wanted could have fit in a box the size of a Large-based ship like the Firespray. It didn't need to be used in the Decimator's packaging. Plus, the StarViper and Decimator are both examples of creating new box sizes. Why not create a new one for Most Wanted?
It is also very ineffiencient with space. The way the aces are packaged looks cool but they could have halved the dimensions. But no hair off my bantha.
The old B clamshell actually allows it to fit into a perfect space in my small Plano. I couldn't have done that with the rebel aces B clamshell. Thankfully, someone had an extra old B shell I took.
And holy hell I had to really cut off a lot of the top of the decimator's shell. Wayy too large.
And yes, I agree, I wish the packaging was less. Probably could have fit everything for large ships within the space currently now that is just the plastic part. That would have been a fine size.
Yeah it is all fun to complain about everything... until you start getting busted ships.
"Dammit why don't FFG use better packaging?!?!"

i don't think people think about the size of the packaging at all when it comes to price
you can clearly see that there are 3 models included in the package.

I think you think you don't think about package size when buying ships, but I think FFG knows that you don't know that you think about package size.
j/k
I think the package issue is not directed at the ones who read all of the articles multiple times online before a product is ever released. To us, we've already been convinced to buy their product or not. The packaging issue is more for those casual browsers that enter their LGS or Barnes and Noble and see this thing on the shelves they've never seen before.
Plus, it's not just getting a price:size ratio that people can believe, it's also about just being bigger so people notice it on the shelf. This ties into meekor's comments about the beauty of FFG's packaging as well. By having a large package with beautiful art, it draws browsers in to that product. FFG is very familiar with this marketing strategy. Remember that they are notorious for their coffin-box board games like Runewars and Twilight Imperium. These games were sold in huge boxes that grabbed your attention, but it was mostly air inside. In fact, they went so far on the size spectrum that stores didn't want to carry that product because it took too much shelf space (so I've heard). So the revised edition of Runewars is much more compact than the first edition.
I remember PC games that came in HUGE packaging with an itty bitty discs and rulebooks!
From a producion standpoint : It is easier to use an existing box in your inventory to accommodate your product...People do nott realize the process involved in creating a diff size box...It is more economical than having to spend more time to create a new one...I am quite certain that FFG examines the dimensions of the ship and utilizes one of thier current warehouse packaging...They already know that there is no need to have a diff cutting die...This greatly increases the productivity and allows to have an already time on target window...The only thing they have to adjust for is the interior plastic casings...These will always be diff to ensure that the ship arrives intact , nott in a Lego broken mess...
I want to be able to play x-wing with my grandchildren. The problem is my wife and I are still working on our first child. My worry is, thanks to modern ludicrously wasteful packaging, of which FFG is guilty, there wont be a planet left for my grandchildren, and they will have to roam the countryside in search of petrol, all the while fending off feral diesel nomad bands, instead of having a luxurious life where I have the leisure time to devote to playing X-Wing.
No, it doesn't bother me at all...the packaging is attractive and well-designed.
I used to spend many sleepless nights due to agonizing over FFG SWXW packaging...but after some extensive therapy I am once again able not only to get a good night's sleep, but to face the future with optimism and hope.
Edited by GaresonI don't like it but I understand why it's that way and I can't see it changing.
The one rule of retail: shelf space is prime real estate
I would prefer it if the packaging was made so it will store the mini in a larger case made by FFG. That way it comes out of the clamshell and goes into an FFG X-Wing branded case.
