Lords of Nal Hutta vs Fly Casual

By dpb1298, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

My group and I (the GM) are enjoying Edge of the Empire. We have the Beginner Game, Core, Far Horisons and Dangerous Covenants. We really want to do more in Hutt Space but we have a Smugger player and from what I have heard it is a great supplement for a variety of reasons. I don't know which one the purchase as I only have funds for one of them.

I want to know which one you all think I should get based on my predicament.

Have the smuggler player buy the smuggler book and you pick up the Hutt one?

What Desslok said isn't a bad idea, if your player has the $$$ and is willing to pitch in. But if you absolutely had to choose one I'd go for Fly Casual, since that relates directly to one of the careers your players can choose to play. Lords of Nal Hutta is more a GM resource.

Having a player put actual $$ in a game makes them more invested in that game, at least in my experience. This would be a good move to get player buy-in, in a very literal sense :)

The above advice is great. But I would get Fly Casual and then Lords.

You can always tell an adventure or two on the way to Hutt Space.Hopefully, you have the cash for Lords by the time the players are almost there.

I think Lords of Nal Hutta is a better value (by that I mean more crunchy/fluffy content - there are 30+ new opponents, 4 new races, lots of background on the Hutt clans, tons of info on a variety of culture and background for many planets in Hutt space, etc)

I think Fly Casual is probably better material specific for a smuggler player, although i'm just reading the info later in the book (such as forging transponder codes, etc).

Tell your players to each contribute some money :)

Personally, I would do Lords of Nal Hutta.

Fly Casual is a great book, but I would buy the book that serviced the whole campaign over catering to just one player.

I am the GM, I and one other player buy the materials due to the other two players budgets and I keep them all to write up stores and such. But that's enough talking about my groups strange dynamics. Which one is better? We like ships, gear, NPC's and modules.

There are more NPCs in Lords of Nal Hutta. There are 4 new races in that book, 3 in Fly Casual.

What you get in Fly Casual is specific smuggler info (such as the talent trees for the 3 new specializations).

If the party is going to be doing a lot of smuggling, traveling and running a bunch of con jobs, then Fly Casual is hands down better.

The ships are better in Fly Casual, but overall, there are a lot more resources for the game in Lords of Nal Hutta.

If money is an issue, Fly Casual is cheaper.

Personally, I would do Lords of Nal Hutta.

What Doc said. Nal Hutta would benefit the entire group, while Fly Casual would benefit just the smuggler. Plus, as everyone else said, get the smuggler's player to buy Fly Casual :) If he likes the game, he should invest in it.

Not really. Fly Casual has a lot of good stuff not just for the smuggler. Any group of less than law biding individuals will benefit from that book. Especially the additional information on Astrogation.

In reading more through Fly Casual, I think it has a lot of good stuff - I'm reading about gambling, astrogation, etc. But I can't get over the 30 adversaries in Nal Hutta in terms of value.

If you had to choose, I would probably go Smuggler Book over Hutt Book. The mechanics for running a game around moving cargo, the astrogation rules, the new ship mods - they win over a really well done setting.

But really, both are solid. I don't think there's a poor choice here.

Bacon or blowjobs?

My vote is both. But if you must choose I agree that I think Lords should be first as it is a better GM resource.

I would personally go with Lords of Nul Hutta but that's just me. I'm basically my group's resident starship geek and I was vey disappointed by the selection in Fly Casual. I think there should have been some more sil 5 and maybe even a sil 6 sized smuggling craft class included.

Of course they will :) Both are must-have books. I'm just saying that LoNH is full of campaign info that, assuming you're running a campaign in Hutt Space, would benefit the entire group, since it has lots of info that the GM can use. Of course, if nobody is interested in Hutts, then FC is the obvious choice.

Vegans taste better. Just an FYI.

Yeah, but they sure don't look it.

That's cool. I just thought you were comparing with two other things you really enjoy. ☺
