Aurebesh

By UnfairBanana, in X-Wing Off-Topic

So, this just hit me while browsing Shapeways and seeing something called an Aurek fighter or something.

Why do we use English letters for rebel ship names when the SW universe uses Aurebesh?!

So you mean an X-Wing is actually a "Flurb"-Wing in the Outer Rim?

Well I believe it's Xesh...however the hell that's pronounced. Maybe that's why.

Also, while looking up letters because I only know like the first three, I see D is Dorn. Worf tribute? :P

Apparently the "High Galactic alphabet" exists side-by-side with Aurebesh, which explains where we get R2-D2, T-65 X-wings, and the like.

I don't think I'll be able think of my T-65s as anything other than Flurb-wings now. :D

Star wars happens in a galaxy far, far away... But the design department is from this one.

Because the original movies came equipped with universal text translators, sadly these were removed due to cost so only the verbal translators remain.

Also Lucas is the king of unnecessary changes and can't leave things be, jar jar abrhams is his Sith apprentice.

They galaxy as a whole may use aurebesh but lots of people use diffrent languages. Hell hebrew is in the sw galaxy I'm not surprised english exists in the sw galaxy.

I always saw it as the SW universe writes in aurebesh, speaks in 'basic', but is translated into english for our benefit. So 'x-wing' is the translated name so we can make sense of it.
