Converting credits into Obligation (and vice versa), what ratio?

By BarbeChenue, in Game Masters

Hi !

I'd like to know how other GMs trade credits for added Obligation (or the opposite), what ratio they use in which circumstance and if there's a guideline anywhere for that?

For example, I've used two ratios:

For personnal purchases of gear/weapons/armor, etc. I use the relatively uneven number of 1750 credits = 1 Obligation (Debt)

(My players are pretty rich already, and they never abused this, they even invest cash into reduced Obligation at the same rate!)

For larger purchases, large starships, buildings, and roleplay equipment (like a research base, weapons for a mercenary band, the dry docking fees of a Star Destroyer) I use the most "optimal averaged ratio" suggested for investing in a homestead/commerce in Far Horizons, which is around 6000 credits per Obligation.

For everything else, I pick a number in between.

How do you value Obligation in your games when it comes to credit conversion?

i don't use ratios, I use situations. Borrowing 20,000 credits from a con man on the rim has a different obligation than getting 5000 from a Black Sun Viggo. Taking a mortgage on a ship from a Core world bank would be lower than begging for the last few credits to buy your family from slavery from a Arms Merchant.

There isn't anything wrong with your numbers. And as you pointed out, it also depends on how much money your game plays with. Your guys are kinda rich, but you would need different numbers for a barely scraping by game set on Ord Mantel.

Obligation feels like it is more about the consequence of failure to live to your obligations than it does how much you borrowed.

Killing a no-name guard has different consequences than stepping on Jabba's tail.

The parties in which I've been involved haven't usually used obligation to receive credits. We've received obligation from stupidity and getting caught (bounty/wanted/criminal). We can usually pay down said obligation at the rate of 1000 credits per point of obligation.

Just another data point for your set.

I still think that Hutt is going to end up hating us.

If everyone doesn't wind up hating us, we're doing something wrong. ;)

I saw a Corellian step on Jabba's tail in Mos Eisley once, and Jabba just went "SQWAAAAWK" and then let the guy go. It was really weird. Jabba's best killers were just standing around watching, too.

Dangerous Covenants says that the Debt Obligation can potentially increase a point for borrowing "a few thousand credits" so presumably it can be payed off at a somewhat less favorable rate (lenders need to make a profit on the deals). So if borrowing 3k credits gets you 1 Obligation, presumably 5k might pay off 1 Obligation.
