S&V on a budget

By RodTheCid, in X-Wing

Hello hive mind, need your input on this important decision, I have a tight money situation so I'll have enough money to buy only two boxes of the new S&V ships for now and in a few more months the other two, I think I can stretch my money for a big set and a single ship, just as additional info, I have at least one of each of the previous ships, so I'm trying to find the box sets that also include upgrades that I can use with either my rebels or empire collections.

I was thinking that I would buy the Most Wanted set and the StarViper, Do you guys think its a good plan? What would you do?

Thanks all :P

It depends on what you like, what you've got, and what you're after. I think Most Wanted is the way to go, yeah, but you might also be interested in a Scyk instead of the Viper; your call. Do you want a top-notch (high cost) ship with some Autothrusters for your other ships to enjoy? Or do you want a light fighter with a bunch of sexy new cannons for the rest of your fleet?

Either one gets you good upgrades to use elsewhere, I think. Most folks could probably be happy with either of those two.

I would go Star Viper and Aggressor and just proxy the Most Wanted stuff for now with existing Z-95/Y-Wing.

The reason why I don't care for Scyk is because:

1. The Mangler Cannon is already in the Aggressor set. Don't care for the other two.

2. Scyk encourages Swarm tactics, and it is difficult to play Scyk + Swarm on a budget.

3. I find the Scyk's stats rather lackluster. The Heavy Scyk upgrade doesn't make it much better - it just gives you a very costly (for its stats) glass cannon.

Depends on your budget... Here is what I got today.

:)

I feel like you need at least one of every expansion, because all of the very cool upgrades are scattered in each pack.

That is the bear bones that you need IMO.

;)

If you want to go cheap, you get a star viper and MA-3. Play soontir with auto thrusters, Kath with mangler and calculation.

If you want to play scum you need the most wanted pack and whatever other ship you like.

I went with a single Most Wanted and a StarViper until payday. Getting 7 Ships (if you have a HWK, Firespray, and Y-wing) thanks to the extra dials and ship base cards helps to field more than 50 points in your games.

Even a single Most Wanted pack will give you more than enough to field 100 point squads for fun.

Most Wanted is probably the best value, depending on what you have already (1 each of HWK, Y-Wing and Firespray conversion kits are inside).

Otherwise, probably a StarViper for upgrades, or a Scyk for just being cool.

This. This is what I did.

Yup, Most Wanted and Starviper is my plan. MW alone, with the crossovers, can field a 100 point list, add in the viper for some verity. Next purchase will be 2+Scyk....maybe the Agressor but I want to avoid getting sucked into getting 2 of them. At this time I'm just jazzed to fly my Firespray, had one since it released but could never sully my Imperials with it, always hoped for a merc/bounty hunter faction.

Another most wanted + viper (I threw in an extra Scyk to get free shipping at $100 purchase, since the shipping would have cost the same as the Scyk)

The two biggest (by far) cross faction upgrades are the Y-wing title (honorable mention for bomb slot) and auto-thrusters, and having access to a flagship Starviper with 2 Ys and a Z escort should already make for plenty of solid lists

I got 3 most wanted boxes, 5 scyks, 2 agressors, and 3 starvipers.

But OP on a budget 1 most wanted and then a starviper would be my selection if your limited to just 2 purchases. Assuming you have a Firespray, a Y wing and couple Z 95s for the dials.

Hmm forgot to mention the HWK dials for the scum. Only actual HWKs worth anything atm. But if your really that tight on money since the rebel HWK is really **** near useless in 100 point play I would venture a guess that you never bought such a pointless ship.

I'm surprised you didn't max your IG's out on the spot!

I just picked up Most Wanted and a Star Viper to get my Scum faction started. Seemed like the most sensible budget option. In the not too distant future, I will likely make a phase two purchase: either 2 Aggressors, 4 Sycks or a second Most Wanted with a new Firespray.

At this time I'm just jazzed to fly my Firespray, had one since it released but could never sully my Imperials with it, always hoped for a merc/bounty hunter faction.

Same here.

At some point, I'm going to get off me arse and paint one of my ships, and a Firespray painted in 'Decimator-boring-flat-grey' is high on the list. Then print out a copy of the 'Bounty Hunter' pilot card with the art replaced with a solid-grey ship and call it 'Imperial Warden'. No other changes (still a generic).

That'll make things feel more 'right' to run in an Imperial list.

(At least, that's what I'd been telling myself I'll do for a few years, now. With 'Scum' out, I might actually adjust the plan a bit. Might make as much sense, especially given the Firespray's intended use as a transport, to paint it in Lambda-shuttle-weathered-white. That's got the added bonus, then, of having another model that could be run in a 'Scum' list for a nice variation - it would fit quite well with a number of the ships currently painted in the 'Black Sun' scheme...)

I'm on a budget too... believe it or not. Plus right now two will still be very fun to play around with. i will be getting four more M3-A's next month... and prolly three more Star Vipers, if they are still in stock.

Roark and Jan both have a lot of uses. Jan has won a few store championships this season and pairs well with Crew Kyle.

MW and StarViper is pretty much the best choice for stuff that will work multifactionally, unless you really really want the Mango Cannon.

6 of 19 Most Wanted upgrade cards can be used by non-Scum factions.

6 of 9 for StarViper

4 of 5 for Scyk

5 of 11 for IG-2000

Assuming 1 of each existing expansion, MW allows you to field up to:

2 Scum Z-95

2 Scum Y-wing

1 Scum HWK

1 Scum Firespray

Between that and a single StarViper there are plenty of viable lists for Scum.

You'll have a total of 20 different Scum pilots accessible across those ships.

Most Wanted + StarViper was my call.

Most Wanted + StarViper was my call.

Mine too. I am not a swarm player, as well..., I am not really good at it.

The Scyck therefore is not for me. The will be ditched in my A wing category :P

My favourite ships are the resilient fighterbomber types; Y wings, B wings, and Bombers.

Most Wanted will give more Y wing options and I have good hopes for the Viper ^_^

I might consider a Defender in the future too ;)

Great!

It looks like we share the same opinion for the most part. I'll get MW and the Starviper to get started with S&V, considering that I already have 2 Y-wings, 2 Z95s and 1 HWK290s (yes, sorry Tokyogriz I have a one of those :P ) and of course 1 Firespray, I think I can have fun with S&V as well as complementing Empire and Rebel squads with the upgrades.

I really like the Scyck but definitely seems more like a swarm ship and in a future I would like to buy at least three of them and the IG looks more fun to fly at least in pairs, so that one is also a future purchase

Thanks all :D

Great!

... considering that I already have ... 2 Z95s

I just want to make sure you don't make the same mistake as others have made in thinking that your existing Z-95s will help your Scum out in anyway. Your Scum faction will consist of 2 Y-wings, 2 Z-95s, 1 StarViper, 1 Firespray-31, 1 HWK-290. One Y-wing will be from your existing collection but both Z-95s will be from Most Wanted.

interesting... most likely I'm late for the party (as usual), but Are the Z95 and Ywing rebel dials different from the ones in the Scum MW?

Get MW while you can - they arrived at my FLGS yesterday, I stopped by this afternoon to pick up the packs that I had pre-ordered and they have already sold out of shelf stock - and sold out of M3As - and had only 1 Aggressor left

Oh. Well, they look different, but they are mechanically the same. Technically you need your pilot cards, ship tokens, and maneuver dials to all match the same faction, but if you're not playing at tournaments, nobody's going to stop you using your Rebel dials.
