Spark of Rebellion fan made sourcebook in the making.

By Drathen, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

* Don't restrict it to ONE planet,

I see nothing wrong with fleshing out a base of operations, spending some time worldbuilding. I'd much rather have an all new planet than Tatooine again.

* don't give me TWO Jedi (when, according to the first SW film, "their fire has gone out of the universe")

Technically, neither of them are Jedi. The kid is just starting and Kanan was only a Padawan when the hammer dropped.

* don't give me characters with zero characterization

So how much of the show have you seen? Because they've been fleshing out the characters for a while now. I would much rather have development in dribs and drabs than one massive exposition episode.

* don't give me constant slapstick

You mean like R2's pratfalls, 3PO acting like a goof and Yoda being "wacky".

* and please DO give me some interesting stories.

Obviously the show isn't working for you. I think the first season of Rebels is WAY stronger than the first season (and premiere movie) of Clone Wars. Clone Wars was pretty good at the end. . . but really godaweful when it started.

I really think its too early to start thinking about Rebels based sourcebooks. I would wait until the end of season two or maybe even three see if the show has enough material not available elsewhere to justify a coursebook.

How so? The show is out, people are excited about it, if people want to experience things in the series now, why wait?

Look at how many ship, vehicle, and weapon models plus planets appear in a typical FFG StarWars sourcebook and how many have appeared in Rebels so far. Now remove all of the items which have appeared in official FFG books and I don't see much left.

Although to be fair, in electronic form it's easy enough to add more pages for seasons 2 and 3. . . .

I like your idea for a book. Personally I have not seen a single episode of Rebels. I am partially boycotting it because my beloved Clone Wars was cancelled just as it started getting good. I hope we can flood Disney with letters on May the 4th in support for the Clone Wars. It would also be great if people could bring it up at Celebration. Look at the numbers, Rebels only has a fraction of the viewers TCW had. But that is OT. Sorry for my rant.

Whilst I strongly sympathise, I really really wouldn't deny yourself the show simply because Clone Wars was cancelled. You're missing out on some excellent stuff. It would be like not reading A New Dawn, Tarkin or the new Marvel comics because the old book and comic lines were cancelled.

Also there's a rumour that we may be getting another CW arc, but no details on how, when or even if it will be put out. It may be another Crytal Crisis on Utapau affair, or even a book or comic. We'll see.

I personally thought Clone Wars had been mostly going downhill since the season 3 premiere ended. Rebels is fun but I'm still hoping that as the series goes on and the Resistance movements get more organized we'll get some larger scale battles both on the ground and in space.

Not this is relevant to what you were saying, but it's along that lines. I had a couple of friends - huge, diehard fans that ate, breathed and slept Star Wars far more than I ever could hope - that washed their hands of the franchise when The Great Continuity Purge came down. That always struck me as cutting off your nose to spite your face. Those three Zhan books? The words did not magically fade from the page - they're still there. You can go re-read it again, if you want.

Also, it doesn't help any that 60% of the books and comics were utter shite. I would gladly thrown Thrawn under the bus if it meant dumping every word ever laid down by KJA.

Anyway, back on topic for your off topic. It seems silly to shun a pretty good show just because they pulled the plug on the Clone Wars. Yes, I'd like more - but it wont stop me from enjoying what is shaping up to be a superior series.

Just a heads up guys to who all volunteered...Jaspor or myself will be reaching out to you over the next day or so so bare with us :) Thank you so much everyone for your feedback and support...I hope this will come to everyones liking :)

Wow I only liked one scene out of Darksaber and hated everything else Star Wars related he wrote but even I don't think throwing away the good parts of the EU is worth it if that's the only way to get rid of his works.

Very cool! I got my start in 2005 doing Star Wars Fan Sourcebooks for WOTC's various Star Wars RPG systems, where our main focus was the Clone Wars Fan Sourcebook (link in sig). Sometimes projects like this can lead to bigger things down the road. Good luck!

I agree that season 5 had some very weak arcs but what upset me was the season 6,7 and 8 ones that I heard about. Bounty Hunter's break out all of the Separatist war criminals/ Boba gets Slave 1 back from Hondo, Wookiee arc, Echo arc, Clone Commando arc, more Yoda, Tie in to the opening of Revenge of the Sith, Ventress and Voss, additional Darth Maul, Ahsoka, Mortis, Mandalore, etc. It just really bugs me that there are now so many loose ends.

Interestingly, aside from Lothal, we have had several locations.

Pilot Movie - Kessel

Droids in Distress - Garel

Rise of the Old Masters - Stygeon Prime

Out of Darkness - Fort Anaxes

Fire Across the Galaxy - Mustafar

One complaint about the Cone Wars was that with a different location every other week, you never really got to know anywhere. It was great for we RPG junkies as it added a wide variety of locations (and screen grabs) to describe new locales.

I think the biggest drawback right now with being mainly on Lothal is this: Tarkin has been brought in to 'get the job done' and capture the rebels. Assuming our heroes are not all in irons at the end of season 1, where does the show go next? Lothal is clearly important, I can't imagine the Empire doing less than cracking down even further. And with two force sensitive insurgents charging around, how long before Vader gets involved?

Interesting times. I guess we'll know a bit more after the finale.

Yeah what's up with that? I heard that the protagonists stay on some backwater planet called Lothal (no idea where that is) most of the time. Doesn't make much sense to me for Rebels.

They aren't a full-fledged aspect of the Rebellion or anything. In fact the Rebel Alliance doesn't actually exist; at least definitely not in the way we see it by the time A New Hope rolls around. Only thing they've shown in this respect is Hera having a mysterious contact that gives her assignments now and then.

If you've seen Firefly and Serenity, it's more or less that. They'll take illegal jobs and the like, but if they can rob/steal/mess with the Empire, they'll take the opportunity. Lothal (probably in part because it helps the budget, or because they want to establish a new well-known backwater planet to the public that isn't Tatooine) also just happens to be the place where they've got a smuggling contact, some easier to pick on Imperial assets are, and a Jedi temple are located.

Besides, this is exactly like having a Base of Operations on a planet, only instead, it's a ship.

The Allaince to Restore the Republic aka The Rebellion was around since slightly before Revenge of the Sith

How so? I thought the old republic was around until it was officially absolved. Which wasn't until some time between RotS and ANH. And I thought closer to ANH.

I am referencing the novel Millennium Falcon.

Towards the end of TCW, we see Senator Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, and Padme sitting down to have the first discussions of what they fear is coming and what they might have to do as a result.

Personally, I would consider that to be the time when the Rebellion was conceived, but I don’t think it could have officially been born until such time as the Republic and the Senate were officially abolished.

Then Leia couldn't be part of the Rebel Alliance at the beginning of Ep IV as the Senate was just abolished by the Emperor and order of the systems turned over to the various sector Moffs. Yet Vader is already running around dealing with rebels and hunting down members of the Rebel Alliance. They even used to have a base on Dantooine...

UPDATE: changed a few things on this one. I used the REBELS logo instead of the Edge of the Empire since this sourcebook can be used for any of the 3 games in the series.

If things go well with this sourcebook, I'm thinking of doing one for clone wars...of course that will take a while as well lol.

Quoth Wookieepedia :

The origins of the overall anti-Imperial movement dated back to 19 BBY, shortly before the Galactic Republic's transformation into the Empire. Some of the Alliance's core founders, such as senators Bail Prestor Organa and Mon Mothma of the Loyalist Committee, joined the Delegation of 2000 in its opposition against the authoritarian leadership of then-Chancellor Palpatine. In 18 BBY, barely a year into the Empire's existence, military resistance had already been formed in opposition to the new regime; one of which was a group of insurgents known as The Eleven, joined by the fugitive Jedi Ferus Olin. By 2 BBY, several resistance groups were unified into a single rebellion, thus creating the Rebel Alliance.

That pretty closely jives with the way I was thinking about it, but that level of detail is not preserved on the Canon page for the Rebel Alliance.

So, you can pretty much make it whatever you want.

Agreed. Speaking of the Episode III cut scene or something from the cartoon?

In the cut scene (linking appears to be broken?), they are ONLY speaking of POSSIBLY forming an alliance of SENATORS within the Republic. Talking of politicians being allied is a long ways from a formed military unit ready to strike back at the Empire.

According to the legends material the Alliance was officially formed 2 BBY. Its idea was conceived earlier though.

Yeah, the groundwork for resisting the Empire had been laid during the closing days of the Clone Wars. But an actual, formally structured Alliance to Restore the Republic with military assets and soldiers didn't actually come about until much, much later.

In the EU/Legends, there had been numerous separate resistance groups of "rebels" fighting against the Empire, ranging from small bands like the crew of the Ghost to larger operations such as Kota's Militia, Bail Organa's network of operatives (such as the spacers from the Dawn of Defiance campaign), and Garm Bel Ibis' operation. But they didn't become a cohesive front until a few years prior to ANH. In the revised canon, there's no specific date for the Alliance's birth, though EU/Legends varied from a couple years (courtesy of The Force Unleashed) to longer back (WEG I think placed it at several years, but they were operating under the idea that the Clone Wars had occurred far more than 20 years prior to ANH).

As for the project itself, I'm curious to see how it shakes out.

I'd offer to help, but things have been far too crazy for me of late so I don't know how much time I'd have for working on a fan project.
