"Genius" Mech

By Deltmi, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The wording on the card refers to bombs that "can be dropped before you reveal your maneuver". However, both Seismic and Proton bombs are dropped "When you reveal your maneuver dial". I'm assuming you could still use Genius to drop Seismic and Proton bombs after you move?

I think you're putting a bit to much into the wording.

You drop your bombs before you reveal your maneuver as is, other than the Prox mine. So he lets you do it after you move the ship, rather than before.

Yeah, I thought so.

Why would you do this? Then you'd hit yourself with the bomb...

It's not called "Genius" and cost 0 points for a reason...

someone in another thread pointed out that Genius allows you to drop bombs even if you were ioned.

Seems to me you could also drop it after using daredevil too (too as in instead of, not in addition to)

As for hitting yourself, drop it after your maneuver and then boost or barrel roll via appropriate upgrade.

Or just don't care because you're a cheap Y-wing with 3 shields and 5 hull. Tagging more valuable enemy ships that you blocked with a proton bomb or something seems like mission accomplished to me.

But that's the sort of question we had at a store tournament the other day. The guy with the bomber revealed his dial, laid down his maneuver template, then said "oh yeah, I wanted to drop a bomb [seismic]." We said, "no, you have to do that before you reveal your dial," but the bomb card says "when you reveal your dial."

In theory the correct procedure would be:

  1. Reveal your dial
  2. Declare you're also dropping a bomb
  3. Place the 1 template and then the bomb token
  4. Place your chosen maneuver template
  5. Move your ship.

The wording on the Genius card is probably going to get updated as there are no bombs at the moment that are dropped before your dial reveal. They're all dropped when you reveal your dial. So it's probably safe to assume that's it's all happening at the same time. In which case, the player that wanted to drop his seismic charge was quite correct. The only way I would rule otherwise is if he declared he was going to drop a bomb after he'd moved his ship and tried to backtrack to do it. As somewhat of an afterthought I suppose.

Genius is the only way you can drop after your maneuver, and there's no mention anywhere of having to declare the drop before revealing the dial.

I've never really considered before/after the dial flip to be all that important. It doesn't change anything, and declaring a "before revealing your dial" as a missed opportunity because you flipped your dial seems like a super nit picky gotcha play.

I probably wouldn't let someone go back once they had a template down, since that has the potential for extra information (might as well drop the bomb since that asteroid I hit might kill me, among others) but dial flip-AdvS-action-maneuver should be fine.

Why would you do this? Then you'd hit yourself with the bomb...

Engine upgrade would take care of that, but then... who EUs a Y wing.. lol.. but you could do it

Or you dont care if you take a possible hit.. asmlong as the other guy does.. it's good.

who EUs a Y wing.. lol.. but you could do it

Warthogs work well with EU.

Genius is really best and intended to work with Captain Nym. You could risk eating your own bomb but with Nym friendly ships ignore bombs. Another thing is that the text has been corrected to say when you reveal you dial, the original text was a typo and has been corrected.

I see we have a new Necromancer in town...

Scum Nym can ignore Friendly bombs not friendly ships ignore bombs. Big difference there. But yes, his ability is more than a little broken when combined with Genius since you can make your maneuver, bump ship that moved before you did, still drop the (endless) bomblet behind you, have bomb damage the ship that moved before you did and is in front of you but not damage you even though the bomb is behind you.

Dear god what a necromancer. This is a 3yr old thread man!

It would help if the dates were highlighted a little. They tend to merge with the background.

That said, Genius has been given new life and is raising questions once more. I'm actually searching these threads for thoughts on using Genius after bumping... Looks like Genius can still drop a bomb. I think my interpretation is correct, but I'm known to make mistakes from time to time.

Yep. Genius can definitely drop after a bump.

He's the droid of choice now for Scum Nym. Bumped? Drop your bomblet anyway and watch the ship you bumped still roll for damage.

Profit.

So Nym does NOT take damage from his own bombs? That is an amazing pilot ability.

Scum Nym doesn't. He may ignore friendly bombs.

And Rebel Nym can make them not detonate for the round, so he can drop a bomb with genius, leave it there, and fly away from it next turn.

Turns out that's no different than how the bombs normally drop though so seems maybe a bit weird to do that.

Yes currently Genius cannot be shut down. He will always be allowed to drop a bomb, even if you are stressed/hit a rock/bump/do a red move/get denied your action/ioned/etc/etc/etc/etc

Though i wouldnt be surprised if the Nym build becomes dominating they tweak Genius before anything else so he CAN be shut down (cant do it while stressed or must have revealed a dial)
