Why am I always the GM???

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I just made a character that would be so much fun to play... Pundoba the Hutt entrepreneur. With a monocle... And who refuses to speak basic "What are these? The core worlds?"

A secretive , walking ATM that buys a business everywhere he goes. He invests, he extorts, he smuggles and he thinks it is the most normal thing in the world.

I don't want this guy to be an NPC. I want to play him....

Heh, I'm always the GM too but I find I enjoy it a lot more. I don't really like being a player :)

Sounds like fun.

I take it you have nobody else willing to be GM in your group? If you do have one or two others who are willing, but also want to play, you can rotate as GM, that way everyone can play, and everyone can run. We do this in my group for this game.

I played in a Call of Chuthullu campaign for a while.... That wasn't really my thing, but this game I would like to be a player in.

I am also normally the GM. Though I have one group where I am also a player. We take turns usually changing games with each GM. I found that i love playing a charchter but am way to much of a control freak to really get in to it. You may try one of the online games that get posted on here. Many of those games seem to have multiple GMs and you could probably be a player in one of them.

Good luck

Found another group or online group to join so you can play :)

Or have your group on another day or alternating weekends switch GMs for a different campaign to play :)

The description of Mr. Peanut's head on Jabba's body just popped into my head...and I can't get it out.

I've been lucking out and getting to play lately. It seems that in the past I usually get stuck running because I buy all the books. Our current GM is wanting to switch out after the current storyline runs its course toward the end of the summer. I may take over for him, but I think he does a much better job with characters and acting than I do. I am more of an encounter design person, but sometimes I feel like it comes up short in the execution. Probably being over critical of myself.

I love being the GM. I prefer it. And I make up cool characters too. They either end up becoming NPCs, or I put them aside to be used as pre-gens at demo or con games. Although, I did make one character I would love to play... Bellel, ne'er-do-well treasure hunter: a Besalisk packing four blaster pistols who is always in search of fortune and glory. (And now I can re-stat 'im with Gunslinger instead of Sharpshooter.) He's a Smuggler (Scoundrel, Gunslinger, Archaeologist). A bit of René Belloq and Rick O'Connell.

Pundoba the Hutt sounds pretty awesome.

I am always the GM.

Always.

But it is a fulfilling calling, so I am not complaining.

On the rare occasion that I do play as a player, I am mostly looking for ideas and techniques to be a better GM.

Keeper of the Arcane Lore is my favorite appellation for GM, with Dungeonmaster as a close second.

I like both, Gmastering and playing. I have a group where I am the GM. And another where I can play my Chiss Doctor.

But mostly at other rpg´s I am the GM (Ars Magica, VtM).

As a player I have many ideas for characters - so it´s not so bad if one of my characters die ;-)

That's what we do. Have three or four campagins with different systems or settings running at once each with its own GM.

I'm the Always GM also. I do like to play, but as a player, I know I'm about the worst type out there. :)

A player of mine is getting to start up a campaign, so we will see how I do... :)

As the GM, you get to play ALL the characters! At least that's how I do it.

I have the same...usually myself and another guy GMing, but everybody has their genre preferences, and nobody else will GM Star Wars.

Being the only person in my gaming group who has read the EU at all (and I have, extensively), I get GM duty any time we play Edge of the Empire. Of course, that also means other people run Legend of the Five Rings, Shadowrun, RuneQuest, and all the heavy crunch / complicated systems that I wouldn't ever GM, for which I am eternally grateful...

Do I miss being a player in a Star Wars game? Yup. But I've played in Star Wars games run by my less geeky group members, and they constantly feel the need to ask, "This is a thing in Star Wars, right?" They've got the feel and mood right, and I never call out what seems out of place, but they get intimidated by my knowledge. So I GM all our Star Wars games, since I am the only one who feels comfortable improvising within the lore, which I do a lot... And if the table is happy, I'm happy. Melancholy comes later when I spec out a Knight-level character for fun.

I'd join Play by Post, but for Star Wars, those are pretty rare, and let's face it, Play by Post games die, more often than not. Maybe some day I'll find a system that I really like that is light enough on rules to play on a forum without much trouble, but those are hard to find. Maybe something like Technoir or Lacuna...

Honestly, it's not bad though. I only GM about a third of the time, due to rotation, and since we play games that are usually about 4-5 sessions at a rate of once a week, that means I get GM duty for about a month and then get two months off. How many GMs get that kind of schedule?

Oh, I hear you when it comes to different people from a group GMing however in my group I wouldn't want to have any of my players take over...

Also, if i play i get very critical of GM's in general and get bored quickly. I guess it is a "cannot win" situation....

In my case, I think that others have read the EU more extensively than I have. So, I’m not at all convinced that I’d want to try to be the GM for Star Wars.

But I do have to fight pretty hard not to correct the GM frequently when he mis-quotes Wookieepedia. I may not have read all the EU extensively, but I at least do have a decent memory of the stuff I’ve read recently. I try to chalk up any differences I notice to the fact that his game is his game and doesn’t necessarily correspond perfectly with Wookieepedia, but it’s hard….

I don't know why you're always GM but thank you. :)

I rum Age, my buddy runs Edge and each of us plays in the others game.

I am part of 2 roleplaying groups, in one I am nearly always the GM and in the other 3 of us will GM.

But in both groups when it comes to Star Wars it is always me who GMs. I want to play in a Star Wars game but the other players refuse to run Star Wars because they say they would be too intimidated to run it with me as a player! Apparently they think I know a lot about Star Wars as a setting.

I TOTTALLY understand. As the GM I played an NPC droid, an abused R2 unit which the party took pity on. They liberated him and now they have their own droid who is so eager to please he can get them into trouble. Before I knew I relaised I was playing with the players as a chracter! I better be careful not to over do it!

I got rather lucky. I was GM for Edge of the Empire since it came out, always wanted to play but no one in our group knew the Star Wars universe like me. School became a massive headache and stressful last semester, I couldn't manage writing adventures, working and studying all at the same time. So I told them we would have to wait until winter break or just summer. One of them took pity on me and offered to run Age of Rebellion. Honestly, I didn't realize how stressed I was until I felt it all melt away as we played. I will be forever grateful to my friend for stepping up and taking over for awhile.

I am 90% of the time a GM

I like the control.

I like to build the story.

I like to play the NPC's and act out their part.

When i play i play online only, As a player i am the equivalent of a paladin in my demeanor thus i don't hang out with too many groups too long because its all about the kills. hrm.. boring.
